Angels to be spurned by Friedman?

08:19 AM ET 10.25 | Bill Maddon has for some time contended that Andrew Friedman wouldn't want to leave the roost. The Angels remain highly interested in [Friedman], but their chances of luring the 34-year-old executive away from the Rays are slim, according to people familiar with the team's GM search who are not authorized to speak publicly on the topic. Owner Arte Moreno and team president John Carpino met last week in Florida with Friedman, who has helped build the small-market Rays into perennial playoff contenders despite extremely limited resources -- their $42-million payroll this season was less than one-third of the $142 million the Angels spent on players.

seems like he has a nice payday next year unless the Rays decline and buy it out

He is good. But TB won't pay him. Might as well get a good trade for him while you can. That's all I am saying. Kinda sucks that we never want pay anyone.

Is $7 million really too much to pay the guy next year? He was making $4.25 million this past season and seems to be more than worth it.

How on earth can any self respecting GM candidate take the Angels job without some protection from that idiot savant manager Scioscia?? He completely blew it by shipping Napoli out and put all the blame on Tony Reagins so Arte would fire him. I wouldn't be surprised if it comes out that Scioscia wanted the garbage also known as, Vernon Wells. 20 million for a .205 batting average?

Bill Maddon? Who is Bill Maddon? There is a Joe Maddon that manages the Rays. But he was Manager of the Year in 2008 aqnd just won the Sporting News Manager of the Year for 2011. You'd think if they were referring to him, they'd get his name right.

Dude - I'm a Rays fan too - it's not "won't pay", it's "can't pay". And yeah, with all the starters they have, I'm thinking you deal Shields since you are selling off a career year and maybe address the catcher situation

That makes sense, but a catcher that can hit also.

Moose. You think a new stadium would help TB's chances at all in filling the seats with butts? I think they need out of St. Pete and into Tampa itself.

October 25, 2011  03:13 PM ET

rays must get out of that hole called stadium!!

October 25, 2011  03:14 PM ET

the angels are drowning in their own blood!!

October 25, 2011  03:15 PM ET

its there any talented GM available for this lowly halos??

October 25, 2011  03:16 PM ET

the angels had have being trying to lureout this GM but i doubt the rays would let him walk away just like that!!

October 25, 2011  03:19 PM ET

the halos have to search some where else, if the remain without a GM by the winter meetings this angels would be in deep trouble, their last resort could be bringing back stonman!!

October 25, 2011  03:24 PM ET

angels should search some good GM who could pull them out from where they are right now, their quality level as franchise its the worse in the last ten years, itsn't that the owner doesn't like to shop for good talented prospects, but he doesn't have the right person to make the right calls, the halos haven't being able to grow as a franchise for the longest wonder how much more this bad organization would continue in the same spot!!

October 25, 2011  03:28 PM ET

a team without a good farm system can't grow, a franchise who doesn't have good scouts in their program as how to developement good players draft the right long term prospects, without making too many mistakes over and over, the halos most work very hard in all those areas,

October 25, 2011  03:34 PM ET

this organization can't become strong in top while in the bottom its falling apart, this organization would need to focus in finding a way of how to increase their talent, they need to use better approach in each department, development, drafting, scoutting, this can't continue year after year they have the same issues, lack of pitching, lack of catching, lack in talent!!

October 25, 2011  03:39 PM ET

this franchise can't have the luxury in signing a big talented player as pujols, even if they wanted they just can't do it one player can cover soo many empty spots, this franchise needs more than one good power hitter, they need a very good brainner in the top spot, the president, the GM needs to be a qualified and proved element, the right piece the right person in the right place!
