Was La Russa covering for Duncan?

08:11 AM ET 10.26 | Tony La Russa took a hail of bullets for what seemed to be a mishandling of his pitching staff in Game 5. Thing is, what if he were covering for someone he adores? His best friend, Dave Duncan? What if the guy on the line from the dugout wasn't La Russa, but, say, a loyal and enduring pitching coach? The guy whose wife is ill, whose season was creased by trips home to nurse her, whose head is in the game but also must be in a bedside chair, reading her to sleep? ... Maybe this has nothing to do with the best pitching coach in the business, a man as professional as they come, and a guy who'd certainly rather fight his own battle than have the manager defend him. Maybe I'm dead wrong about the whole thing. Frankly, I probably am.

If you state in your article that "Maybe I'm dead wrong about the whole thing. Frankly, I probably am" then why go any further and prove you are an ****, out to make a name for yourself?

Well, you got the name but it's not flattering

Everyone is second guessed to death in a WS, this isn't any different.

Whe he started to blabber about the phones not working in the bullpen I stop listening to the fool. Sure, blame the Rangers for your screwup. But you were right in giving the fans credit for the noise they were making.

I've heard that commands to the pen also had to go through Bob Gibson and Stan Musial. Those guys got it straight, but then Rogers Hornsby dropped the ball and tried to get Pete Alexander warmed up.

You know, that would be a brilliant way to screw a visiting team...not saying at all that's what happened, but it would be a simple and fun way to get an edge, to mess with the pen communications.

had the surround sound on while watching the game the other night...man, was it loud at that park! and after Napoli hit that double, i had to turn it down some.

That LaRussa was protecting Duncan immediately crossed my mind when LaRussa said we don't throw team members under the bus in this organization. I don't particuarly like LaRussa, I think he's a very good manager who is very willing to tell you so. But in this case I commend him.

October 26, 2011  08:55 AM ET

LaRussa blaming Duncan would be too easy out for him. He's the Manager and everything goes through him just like a CEO of a large company.

Yadier Molina is on steroids.

We have no phones in the Dominican Winter League. We use hand signals and there are no screw ups I can remember.

There was a time when even MLB had to use hand signals. Phones not working would not be a good excuse to justify the bullpen confusion.

Career year that coincides with some nasty anger management issues.
