Papi in, Paps out? And where was John Henry?

08:09 AM ET 10.26 | Theo Epstein stole most of Tuesday's headlines, though his former team made some news, too, in part because of a conspicuous absence. It seemed odd that John Henry and Tom Werner were not there [Tuesday]. Hiring a new GM is a significant move for any organization and Henry needed to be there to demonstrate his faith in Ben Cherington. Perhaps Henry made that clear to Cherington 10 days ago when he gave him the job. But given the public perception of the team these days, Henry should have been there. ... Cherington wants to keep David Ortiz and Jonathan Papelbon, saying the Red Sox would a better team if they stayed. He seemed optimistic regarding Ortiz, less so with Papelbon.

Not sure why press conferances are even needed for these types of events. It's not like Cherington is a big name like Theo's is so of course it made a bigger splash in Chicago. I'd be surprised if either team wins a WS in the next 5 years.

John Lackey is going to have surgery and may miss the 2012 season.
Is that addition or subtraction to a team?

I'd say it's a big plus, a warm body from AAA could have performed as well as he did.
Maybe the Bosox could use Oswalt, to tie in to another T&R?

It is definitely a plus for next year and maybe a glimmer of hope for the future. Maybe there was a reason he has sucked so bad to date. Plus there is a clause in his contract stating if he misses time due to surgery during the original five years of his contract, a team option kicks in for a 6th year at the major league minimum.

Paps has wanted "Mo" money for a while. He won't, or shouldn't, get that much. I will be watching his contract to see what he ends up with.

Extending his stay is not a plus, especially as they essentially want him out the door now.
That is interesting though. things can change.

Death by Bundah!
Or amputation, that would work.

Maybe they could amputate his head?
That really the crux of his problems.
Tiny particle of brain rattling around in his skull, like the great boxer Ken CleanAirSystems.

Yup. Paps is going free agent for sure. I agree with you 100%.

the red sox should keep their closer, signning david ortiz its the right thing to do as long itsn't a long term deal, sox should sign their closer for two years, after that they can see if he really its able to pitch without any type of error or weakness in his arm!!

its a shame, that henry didn't show up his face in the presentation of his new GM, though it was wise from henry, best thing to do kept your mouth shutt because you never know when the words could backfire to you!!

lackey wouldn't be in the bullpen with the other starters nor he will be either in the rotation, the new GM has brought up the bad side in lackey missfortune, the pitcher has being playing through pain and stiffness in his elbow in the past regular season, so that means lackey will be out the whole 2012 season because he its due to have surgery in his pitching elbow!!

The problem with Papelbon is his head is too big. He wants to set the bar for other closers. I say give him a number and don't budge. If he can find better, see you later. As for Big Papi, I say bring him back for 2-3 years. He is still a productive hitter.

Right now the picture is about as clear as the Boston Harbor (with apologies to GHWB). No doubt there will be enough talent left and enough commitment from ownership to keep Boston as a "scary" team. Certainly having Buchholz added to Beckett and Lester will make a difference.
Both Papelbon and Papi can be replaced. But better to have them than not.
