Will Gretzky participate in Winter Classic?

08:25 AM ET 10.27 | Eric Lindros helped breathe some early excitement into the Winter Classic, announcing that he'd be playing in the alumni game, which has some speculating about the ultimate alumni cameo. [Some have hinted] that the Winter Classic would be a perfect way for The Great One to make his long awaited return to the NHL. Even though Wayne Gretzky is better known as an Oiler or a King, he retired as a Ranger in 1999 and racked up 249 points in 234 games. What would be better than seeing No. 99 back on the ice joining up with Ranger greats such as Mark Messier, Brian Leetch and Mike Richter? While it may be a stretch, an opening face-off of Bobby Clarke and Wayne Gretzky would be must-see TV, perhaps even more so than the actual Winter Classic.

Non-story about an alumni game.

Agreed. Just what we need, a bunch of old guys trying not to get hurt playing something that doesn't resemble the actual sport. Announce them to the crowd, let everyone clap if they want to put down their beers for a few minutes (I won't) and get the players on the ice.

Baseball has a softball game the day before the All Star game so I guess the NHL is having its version of softball.

I actually would enjoy a few of the real players playing like a pond game....maybe teach the kids a few things.
For instance, Lafleur could teach them how to sneak a smoke between shifts
Messier could show how to hide the elbow as you smash someone's ribs
Lemieux could show these young amateurs how to PROPERLY hang at the blue line

He tried. Mommy and daddy wouldn't let him.

Maybe its just me, but I could not possibly care any less.

I once went to Maple Leaf Gardens and watched the alumni original 72 Team Canada play against the NHL old timers I think...it was very entertaining and fun to watch these guys...sure they were slower but it was all realative. The plays they made were great and you rarely saw anyone offside...The Classic is about entertainment. I for one would love to see The Great One and others out there...I'm sure it would be a blast for those involved in the game getting back together and playing...for fun.

You make excellent points. Messier can also teach the kids how to "accidentally" put your elbow into someone's teeth when they're about to smash you into the boards.

If they really wanted to do this correctly, they would have a fake bench clearing brawl. That would be an appropriate alumni game for the Flyers and Rangers ;)

Gretzky and Lindros? I don't know who will get booed worse.

Have you heard about how tix to the Winter Classic are being distributed? I briefly entertained the idea of trying to go to the game, but that was put to rest real quick. If you aren't a season ticket holder about the only way to go (if you aren't connected to the Flyers, Phillies, Rangers or NHL in some way) is to get a ticket off StubHub for about $600. Unreal. I guess I'm in the basement watching it on the tv.
