Cavs players refuse to enter game

07:47 AM ET 12.28 | The season of frustration among Cavaliers players apparently seeped onto the bench late in the fourth quarter during Tuesday's game at The Q against the Heat. Coach Mike Brown asked Damon Jones and Ira Newble to go into the game with less than a minute left and with the Cavs holding a commanding lead. It was mop-up time. This is time usually designated for rookies or players on their last NBA leg. Jones and Newble are neither rookies nor at the end of their careers. Veteran Eric Snow went in instead. Newble told Brown he was not ready to go in because he was not loose. It is not clear why Jones refused, but maybe it was because his overall playing time has been reduced for the past two seasons and probably because he asked the Cavs for a trade in the off-season and they have not accommodated his request. Before Thursday's game against the Mavericks, Brown said the issue is an internal matter and he would not comment further. The Cavs fined Jones an undisclosed amount. It is not known if Newble was fined.

Yeah thats it, act like your a productive player and also kiss your career or lack thereof, goodbye. Mwwwah.

December 28, 2007  08:31 AM ET

Not a very bright move. If you demanded a trade, then when you do get on the floor, you need to show your skills to other teams so they want to trade for you.

Instead, these guys come off as immature wanna be basketball divas more worried about pride than being a part of a team.

If there was a team interested in a trade, they just lowered any offer they were considering.

paid to play a game, and they can't even do that to earn their contracts......

December 28, 2007  08:33 AM ET

Here's a suggestion to the Cavs and any other team who has players like Damon Jones...You can pay anybody to take and miss ill-advised jump shots, turn the ball over, and think more of his game than everyone in the league....CUT HIM. Bring is a hungry kid from the D-League who might actually TRY to play defense and fight for every minute he can get in uniform....Has Ira Newble or Damon Jones every taken a team deep into the playoffs? If you're answer is "NO" and you have LeBron James - CUT THEM BOTH!

December 28, 2007  08:39 AM ET

I'm not sure how he makes, but aren;t NBA contracts guranteed? wouldn't they also take a salary cap hit?

problem with just cutting him, if the contract is guranteed, he gets that money, then the money he would get from any new team that picks him up.

Pauliwood
Rockphoenix makes a good point. There are dozens of D leaguers that would give their all to get any minutes awarded them in the "big show." Apparently Jones has forgotten this. After all, that's where he came from before Miami picked him up. If they release him, and another team picks him up, the Cavs would only be responsible for the difference in his salary. At this point, they've got nothing to lose. If he stays, he will eventually become a cancer in the locker room. I say matasticize it before it spreads.

December 28, 2007  09:12 AM ET

Let them go....they should be grateful they have a job and get paid to play 2 minutes a game. Sign me up and I will play the mop up time and shine shoes while I'm on the bench!!!

December 28, 2007  09:14 AM ET

if they would not be burdened by him on their cap, then I am in agreement, to release him.

thanks for the info HHNY....confusing with each league have diff cap rules....

December 28, 2007  09:19 AM ET

Eric Snow, who has much much better resume went in instead? If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Snow the team captain not so long ago? Man, Newble and Jones have some nerve refusing to enter games. I hope they have a provision for levying a very hefty fine. Hurt their pockets.
As always, Snow wins everyone's respect. That's why he's a leader and Jones/Newble are scrubs!!

December 28, 2007  09:24 AM ET

That is the problem with guaranteed contracts. The players know that they are going to get paid, and that they have the power, not the coaches. They could buy him out, but it is not like cleavland is a big market team with lots of cash . . . . . Damon Jones had one good year playing under shaq and got a contract off of that. He is a good career theree point shooter, but he needs a dominante center to draw double teams and kick the ball back out. If your upset about your playing time, how about you improve your game and then you would play more. He might want a trade, but who would trade for him?

December 28, 2007  09:30 AM ET

Hitman

That's kind of my point. I don't think he'd be picked up. He would ultimately end up back in the D League. Perhaps he would gain some perspective.

December 28, 2007  09:31 AM ET

These guys would be a perfect fit for the Knicks team philosophy. Isaiah should trade for them and send away David Lee, who does not fit into the Knicks mold.

December 28, 2007  09:35 AM ET

Hllywd-Happy New Year,

Would a D league team pick him up? I mean he is a good shooter, but his game is so limited I dont know why a team would want him. He is not a shooting guard, he can't run an offence, he can just hit open three's . . . .I can really see Lebron leavng when his contract is up, they are not doing anything to make the team better. Lebron is just playing out of his mind, without him their team is worse than the hawks or timberwolves.

December 28, 2007  10:13 AM ET

I could see Lebron not wanting to go in for mop up duty because he's a star but I can't believe Damon Jones and especially Ira Newble. Ira Newble might be the worst player in the league his only role should be in mop up duty and he thinks its below him?

December 28, 2007  10:28 AM ET

They already have 8 guards one the roster: Hughes, Brown, Gibson, Pavlovic, Snow, and Jones. I see Jones being the worst out of all of them, so why should he be playing more minutes than Snow and Brown?

December 28, 2007  10:30 AM ET

It's all down to attitude.

Even the best of players (Kobe, LeBron, D.Wade, AI) would do anything to be on the court during a game... These lesser players should learn from them... Keep the attitude in the locker room.

December 28, 2007  10:36 AM ET

whiney ****--- millions of people would kill for that spot on a roster

December 28, 2007  12:04 PM ET

Jones had one good season with the HEAT and expect to be treated like a "SUPERSTAR"? Please...that's the problem with the NBA...too many prima donnas. These borderline players better shape up or they will find themselves out in the cold looking in.

December 28, 2007  02:02 PM ET

Damon Jones is BFI. The Cavs need to trade him to get LBJ some help.

December 28, 2007  05:07 PM ET

Damon Jones undoubtedly belongs in GQ; however, it's his IQ that's become a question. Refusing to enter a game because you feel you're too much of a veteran to play garbage minutes is asinine. Play the game you're paid for!
