Bizarre Holiday Bowl penalty

Mack Brown's stepson, Chris Jessie, a member of Brown's football operations staff, briefly became the focal point of the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl against Arizona State on Thursday night in one of the most bizarre plays in Longhorns' history. Texas appeared to have the ball at the Arizona State 44 with 12:40 left in the second quarter after a fumble by ASU quarterback Rudy Carpenter. But just before UT defensive end Aaron Lewis picked up the loose ball near the Texas sideline, Jessie was ruled to have bent over and touched the ball while it was still live on the field. "I thought it was a forward pass and thought the play was over," Jessie said. "I backed up once I realized the play was still alive and didn't touch the ball. But I felt horrible. Mack told me, 'We'll pull it out, and it won't matter.' I just hoped the momentum wouldn't swing too much." After the game, Brown said, "Our family wanted to win the game so badly, he thought he'd help."

College boys touching balls on the sidelines... Gotta penalize that one.

*sigh... Surely some editor will nuke that. But I had to say it.

Oops ...

Big deal! Why aren't we discussing why Arizona played such a lousy game? Arizona's offensive line can't block and Carpenter was horrible most of the night. They flat got a down home butt kicking like they deserved. Coach Brown's stepson did Arizona a huge favor or the score would have been worse. Next time Carpenter ought to think about putting his efforts into playing a good game instead of running his face with cheap talk.

Remember this old song??? "You Can't Touch This"...

It didn't look like he touched it. I'm surprised the refs called that penalty when then threw a flag in that same play for intentional grounding.

Dang, Captain. Is nothing sacred? Reminds me of South Park where NO ONE is safe.

He made a grounding motion before he reached down for it. It didn't look like he touched it, but he was at least 5 feet out on the field which is also against the rules.

He wasn't the only one on the field either. The whole team was practically out there.

It is good that it had no bearing in this game. Can we move on now?

Who cares all it proved is how weak the Pac10 really is! And how strong the Big12 really as this year. Hook Em Horns! The Big 12 will win atleast 5 to 6 Bowl games this year if not all 8.

If George Bodenhimer and Tom Sutton have an once of integrity between them they will publicly apologize to the young man intentionally and maliciously humiliated by ESPN???s despicable coverage during the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl. ESPN???s deplorable conduct should be the topic of blogs, letters to editors and complaints to Disney???s Board of Directors until those responsible are severely disciplined. I hope some clever lawyer sues the socks off ESPN on behalf of the guy they treated so cruelly.

I didn't think he actually touched the ball. Noone I was watching the game with (including my wife a die-hard aggie) thought he touched the ball. I'm still trying to figure out how they had indesputable video evidence that he touched the ball.

Having said that, what the heck was he doing that close to the field?! He arranges hotels and flights for the team, thats his one job. Get the boy away from the action when he doesn't need to be there. I don't care if he IS Mack's stepson.

Thats an un-surprising 0-2 start in this bowl season for the Pac-10. Probably the weakest, most overrated conference in all of college football, just ahead of the big Least.

And I agree, I think ESPN owes the kid an apology. It wasnt that big of a deal.

Sure looked to me like he never touched the ball it never went off course or anything

December 28, 2007  05:36 PM ET

The whole thing was hilarious. Lucky for Chris it didn't affect the outcome of the game.

I had a great laugh over it. I'm a Sooner fan and, first of all, knowing the Carphorns are stuck in the "if it's the only thing on TV I'll watch it" bowl game, and then having some muscle head run out on the field from the sidelines and try and pick up the ball? Man, you can't stage that kind of theater. Hey Texas, can you spell BCS anymore? Hahahahahahaha!!!!! Boomer Sooner, Sooner_Girl!!!

Hey Hooah, it must really suck for you guys to be back in the same bowl in which you were humiliated last year... Hey, at least you dont have to worry about the Mighty Broncos of Boise State this year. Getting to a BCS bowl is one thing, try winning the game this time.

Didn't that guy play the kid with the Banjo in "Deliverance?"...I always wondered what happened to him. Wow, he is Mack's stepson. Wonder if he still plays the banjo.

He's really an Aggie in disguise.
