08:42 AM ET 10.29 | Check in with Jose Reyes, perhaps make a modest offer, then step back while he collects proposals and allows other clubs to set his market value: That is the Mets' negotiating strategy with their free-agent shortstop, according to people familiar with the team s thinking.

I guess they are trying the e-bay method with him. For their sakes, they better hope they time it right.

Reyes will get offers from clubs. He is talented, and still young. The Mets just lost him.

The Mets should let him go if the price is too high. It's not like they have won anything with him, and the injury risk is too great.

Take care Jose....don't let the door hit you on the way out.....Mets will take the 2 picks and move on..."Moneyball East"......no more big contracts for the Mets......Bernie has spoken......

If that was their plan they should have traded him.

I never could follow this logic. If the Mets need to have more than one first rank player to win something, what are they going to win without any top tier players?
Of course, the could always go "Moneyball East" as suggested....And not win anything.

the mets should let go reyes, its this the right thing to do? if the mets do not resign reyes does the mets get number one draft pick? could the mets find better ss, in their minors with the lowest salary? if the mets gets compensation for reyes that would be + for the franchise, the mets don't need to add another long term contract to their hefty payroll, this franchise should continue what they allready had being starter back in the beggining of the season which its keep up the good payroll cut untill the franchise its able to have the best payroll in the first ten teams!!

mets top priority should be, injury free players, second goal for the mets should be bring the payroll as lowest they can, third goal should be to develope better talent in their minor system, and fourth should be to work in learning how to reduce so many injuries in every year!!

wonder why the brewers would sign reyes? if the brewers can't sign fielder, neither reyes can be signed, the brewers would need enough funds to sign either player,,,

San Fran will pay the money. Not a lot of teams have the cash to pay Reyes, but a few will make offers.
Dark-horse bidder...Seattle Mariners.

Don't understand if this was going to be their approach all along! why didn't they trade him? I guess they really needed him so they could say we had a batting champ! And in the manner he won it, is not something to brag about. They honestly need not sign him at this point. And eat part of Bay's contract and get him out of here! Let Pagan walk, sign Pelfry and move him to the 4 spot! Use the money they save to get a couple of closers if the price is right Nathan and Capp and get a real #2 starter and Sizemore to play leftfield or center and finally let Martinez play or play his way out of Citifield! OH well it's nice to dream! Another 5 year rebuilding plan WOW!

Although he would look great at SS for the Red Sox, their record on signing free agent SSs has been terrible. Reyes looks like a possible repeat disaster given the amount of money he would get and the potential for injury. The trio without Theo is unlikely to look at him and go with Scaturo and the SS in the minors.
