08:45 AM ET 10.29 | The Cubs and Red Sox have until Tuesday to agree on Theo Epstein compensation, but Commissioner Bud Selig doubts the sides can close the deal. Selig said Friday night that he may have to decide which minor league players go from the Cubs to the Red Sox. "They have until Nov. 1 - before this comes to me,'' Selig said. "If I had to guess it'll be another thing that I have to deal with on Nov. 1.''

Both sides have dug their heels in too far on this deal. Neither has any leverage, but they're going to leave in to the league to decide so they can save face by saying they didn't cave.

This coming from a commissioner( a name only for an owner turned lackey because they did not want a real commissioner ) who has stood back and let deals go through the last few years that would have been voided by every commissioner before him because they were nothing more than money laundering schemes.

The Red Sox didn't really want Theo back, so what is the problem? Make it a cash settlement, or a low minor leaguer, and let's move on.

Why? Don't they deserve some compensation for letting Theo out of his contract?

Not necessarily true; Theo wanted out of his contract, and the Sox would have kept him if he hadn't wanted to get out of town himself. He realized he'd put himself in a hole with the free agent deals he had made and didn't have a lot of wiggle room to solve the team's issues.

Theo/Hyder and Cherington are in an impossible situation. All close friends, former colleagues, now expected to negotiate a deal that sets the value of Theo's one year left on his contract? That's not going to be something that keeps all sides happy.
Best to let Selig do it, so their are no accusations of a bad deal etc.

The White Sox didn't want Ozzie Guillen back either but got two good prospects in compensation from the Marlins. Epstein should command much more compensation than Guillen. Selig should give the Red Sox two top prospects. Of Brett Jackson, Matt Szczur, and Trey McNutt, let the Cubbies pick one to keep with the other two going to Boston,

if the red sox and the cubs lack in knowledge on who or whom should be traded, selig will settle this dificult issue in no time,,, the red sox have to understand that the player that they have to take in are minor leaguers not major leaguers, whoever its in the majors should be intouchable,,,

business are normal and simple but sometimes the teams or the franchise has to make itr a beat more interesting!!

the yankees will keep an eye on the red sox and the rangers as well, the angels won't be a treat for the yankees because they allready have a hefty payroll!!!
