Penn State QB breaks silence

Penn State senior quarterback Anthony Morelli did not need any of his coaches or teammates to defend him yesterday. He took care of that himself. Morelli made a surprise visit to the Nittany Lions' news conference at the Alamodome. He arrived approximately 10 minutes after a handful of defensive players already had been fielding questions, and a little more than 24 hours after he became the most talked-about no-show at the Alamo Bowl. Morelli spoke with reporters yesterday for the first time in 47 days. He blamed his absence from the Wednesday news conference on crossed signals, saying he was at Sea World with his family.

Other significant sportswriter observations:

Morelli had matching socks
Morelli gave answers of no more substance than we heard from others
Morelli was wearing a blue and white button down collar shirt
Morelli's favorite food is spaghetti
It is very, very slow trying to report bowl games when nothing is happening

There's a reason they call them sportswriters and not journalists

Captain Sunshine wrote, "Press conference for the biggest game of your life and you're at Sea World? You've got a nice career ahead of you as the Tiger tamer at the SF Zoo." Well, last year's Outback Bowl was more significant than this year's Alamo Bowl. So saying it's the game of his life is not really accurate. Besides, playing OSU or Michigan is probably bigger in his mind.

What a bunch of overly-sensitive people. I'm talking about the sportswriters. Why should he have to "defend" himself? What's so bad about just not wanting to talk to the press. The reporters bug you until you say something, if you don't say anything they print libel against you, or if you blow up b/c they're bothering you it's all over the news. Freedom of press is great, t'ain't it?

The coaching staff has been protecting AM's feelings his entire career. Even in Penn State friendly Happy Valley. That is fine when you are a sophomore coming off a tough loss, but he conveniently ducks the media following disappointing losses or performances, even in his senior season. A mature QB faces the press and takes his lumps if necessary. That is why you sign up to play division one football.

For a guy that fashions himself an NFL talent....it doesn't say alot for maturity & leadership. He would get ripped to shreds if he did that in the NFL. Of course he will have to learn an NFL system first. Good luck to the team that spends a draft choice on him.
