Will Ortiz attract NL interest?

10:15 AM ET 10.30 | David Ortiz has told friends that he???d like a three-year deal from the Red Sox to be their designated hitter. The chances of the Sox committing to a 36-year-old player for that long appear slim, though a compromise of two years isn???t out of the realm of possibility. But we must raise the question: Will Ortiz be limited to the American League? Will his pool be Boston, Toronto, maybe Tampa Bay, Baltimore, and the Angels, or could National League teams actually consider him as an everyday first baseman? We asked several general managers and talent evaluators in both leagues. There were some who dismissed the first base option as blasphemy, but a good amount of others didn???t feel the idea was that far-fetched. ???The more you hit, the better the defense looks,?????? said an NL general manager.

He does not even own a glove. That would be funny to see though.

An NL team could sign him with the best intentions - but he'd gonna wind up pulling Matt Stairs duty sooner rather than later.

He never embarrased himself the times he has played 1st but his range is limited and also opens himself up to more injuries.

Maybe the Phillies can sign him. Their overpaid first baseman who can't field is on the shelf for a while. At least Ortiz strikes out less in key situations.

ortiz will go where ever he is needed, the player still have gas in the tank plus this past season he wasn't slow at the beggining of the season!!

October 30, 2011  12:22 PM ET

the red sox will sign ortiz to a two years deal, can't see any other team signing this player,,,

October 30, 2011  12:24 PM ET

To do what, bench coach? Any NL GM that signs him to be an everyday first baseman at anything over the league minimum should be fired.

Why, did Howard, Sandoval and Fielder take them all?

October 30, 2011  12:37 PM ET

The guy has no desire and is too lazy to play defense everyday. Only his agent will even suggest playing 1B as a possibility.

October 30, 2011  12:39 PM ET

should the rays sign david ortiz to a two years/ 30 million deal??

why this players when playing in the first base spot tend to get big? is it because they don'thave the room to run? or they should be used as a outfielders to lose some weight? just saying!!

Are you implying that we could be seeing Big Papi roaming (more like grazing) the Outfield in the future?
