NHL heading down NBA path in labor?

08:26 AM ET 11.01 | The NHL has a damaging work stoppage in its recent past, and yet there is some speculation trouble may again be on the horizon. The first month of the NBA season was wiped out by a dispute between the league and the players' union over the division of revenue. Will we be saying the same thing a year from now about the NHL, whose collective bargaining agreement with the players' union expires on Sept. 15, 2012? "I'd like to know that too," said Donald Fehr, the union's executive director. It's easy to picture NHL owners -- some of whom also have stakes in NBA teams -- watching basketball players make concessions and salivating at the thought of asking for similar concessions next year.

The mere mention of the name 'Donald Fehr' should strike fear in the heart of every owner. He'll bankrupt the league just to prove a point. He doesn't care about hockey or the fans. One of the biggest ego in the world of sports.

"NHL heading down NBA path in labor?"
With the Buttgoblin in charge, the emphasis is definitely on the words "heading down." As in "way down!" Because that's where the NHL has been going under his direction all along.

If the NHL stops play again, consider hockey in the United States history. I think to some degree, the 04 lockout was understood (though still reviled) is generally accepted as a necessary evil that produced what is thoroughly a more exciting game today with healthier franchises (even if the cap has soared). Have another one, though, and it'll be the Canadian teams and a couple in the NE US remaining.

No question about it. With Fehr "guiding" the NHLPA you can bet that there will be a strike, lockout, call it what you will. Matter of fact, without one, Fehr will consider it a failure on his part to generate terror. Quite frankly, without the huge TV contracts in the NFL, MLB and NBA the NHL players could arguably considered to be overpaid right now. I have no sympathy for ownership either. My sympathy goes to fans who fork over thousands of dollars in over-priced tickets , $7.00 for a beer, $5 for a hot dog, $5 for a program and tons of money for parking AND THAT's BEFORE THE PUCK IS DROPPED.

We have nothing to fear but Fehr himself.

Didn't the NHL write the book on this process?

Forget Fehr being the issue, it's the commish. The one constant will be the head of the NHL, not the head of the NHLPA.

It took me a few years to get over the last lockout. I don't know if I could endure another work stoppage. The NHL and players need to realize that the fans have other sports to turn to and will lose interest if the lockout/strike.

Another work stoppage in the NHL will probably kill the sport in the USA for years. Attendance is down already.

Time will tell. But the work stoppage in Dallas this year hasn't hurt Cowboy's attendance. Yet.

The NHL can't afford another lost season. The sport's at it's highest popularity level since '94 and needs to continue the momentum and take advantage of non-season in the NBA this year.

I'll take those two World Series appearances... but Game 6 will take awhile to reconcile.
But - the Stars... feel-good story in the works. Too damn bad Fox Sports and DirecTV are going to impede my viewing enjoyment while they throw stuff at each other.
