NBA now behind MLS in average attendance

08:07 AM ET 11.04 | The math is a little unfair, but kudos to MLS for getting closer to filling buildings. While [NBA] owners and players are feuding over billions of dollars, Major League Soccer has propelled above the NBA in attendance. The MLS is now the No. 3 sport in the U.S. according to attendance per game, averaging 17,870 fans over the 2011 season. That catapults the MLS over the NBA (17,319) and the NHL (17,126). The MLS averaged 16,675 fans per game in 2010. These statistics are a bit misleading, as MLS stadiums are typical significantly larger than NBA and NHL arenas and the MLS plays a shorter season, thus earning less overall profit.

17,300 X 41 = 709,300 X avg ticket of $75 (likely a lot higher) = 53,197,500 per team. The NBA is losing a ton of money. TV contracts, Merchandise, etc. I'm lost.

You know your math....

NBA now behind MLS in average attendance

I suppose it would be pretty easy to make such an assessment during the lockout. It also points to the number of foreign-born "Americans." Very misleading statistics.

Not to mention soccer plays games in 60,000 seat stadiums. This is stupid.

Soccer is not played in 60,000 seat stadiums, almost every single MLS team has their own stadium which holds 17-25 thousand. Also, the average NBA ticket does not equal $75, i have no idea where you are getting that number from but there is zero % chance it is that high. As a matter of fact in 2010 it was $48. Also most of those NBA teams do not own their arena but rent, where most MLS teams own their stadium

only 3 MLS stadiums hold more than 27,000 and only 7 hold more than 22,000 and that is out of 18 teams, rather than just throwing arbitrary numbers out there, why don't you use this magical invention called "Google" and try actually looking something up

The attendance figures are based on the most recently completed season, MLS just finished their regular season, so they used their latest figures to compare attendance. The fact that the NBA is in a lockout is irrelevant to these numbers.

Attendance figures in this comparison are based on the last completed season. MLS just completed their season, allowing them to compare their numbers with the other leagues. The fact that the NBA is in a lockout is irrelevant, genius.

I don't know where you're gettin a $48 as an avg. Try gettin a lower bowl/level or mid level (we won't even mention sideline or courtside seats, or sky box etc.) at $48. It's very apparent that you visit games at ? for this $48 nose bleed seat only. You won't find this avg seat in NY/BOS/LA/CHI/PHI/ORL/MIA/DAL/SA/PHX/DET/NJ/. Rent equal rent and certainly not gate sales so who cares if they do in fact rent. Gate sales are only 25-35% of revenue earned by these teams, add in concessions/merchandise/tv deals etc.

I'm getting $48 as an average ($48.08 to be exact) because that IS THE AVERAGE. It is down 2.5% from 2009 actually. Once again people, it is called Google, i mean it's REALLY EASY TO USE.
