No hometown discount from Reyes

08:13 AM ET 11.04 | Odds are slim that Jose Reyes -- or any free agent who has played in New York -- would give the Mets a hometown discount. According to Steve Phillips, who was the team's general manager from 1997 to 2003, there's no such thing in New York. "The New York teams rarely get hometown discounts because there's always been an assumption that the New York teams don't need hometown discounts to keep a player," said Phillips. ... "It's different than if you're in Minnesota or Kansas City or Tampa and you want to stay there. You know that they can't afford more, there's no debate about it." Jim Duquette, who was the Mets' general manager in 2004, said in his experience, certain players even demanded a premium for playing in New York.

(Lake/Sinfield)
C'est la vie
Have your leaves all turned to brown
Will you scatter them around you
C'est la vie
Do you love
And then how am I to know
If you don't let your love show for me
C'est la vie

Oh c'est la vie
Oh c'est la vie
Who knows, who cares for me
C'est la vie

In the night
Do you fight a lover's fire
Do the ashes of desire for you remain
Like the sea
There's a love to deep to show
Took a storm before my love
Flowed for you
C'est la vie

Oh c'est la vie
Oh c'est la vie
Who knows, who cares for me
C'est la vie

Like a song
Out of tune and out of time
All I needed was a rhyme for you
C'est la vie
Do you give
Do you live from day to day
Is there is no song I can play for you
C'est la vie

Oh c'est la vie
Oh c'est la vie
Who knows, who cares for me
C'est la vie

Will Reyes give any team a discount when he is hurt and misses 70 games in a season?

November 4, 2011  09:13 AM ET

Non - story: How about a worthwhile discussion? Odds of where Jose lands:

Nationals: 35%
Giants: 25%
Brewers: 15%
Cards: 15%
Mets: 10%

2005..161 games....2006 ..153 games....2007..160 games....2008..159...2009..36 games (hurt)..2010..133 games....2011..126 games....

So technically he's only really missesd 70 games once in 2009......granted the last two years hes missed quite a few but not 70.....

Just throwing a number out there. It's always funnier to exaggerate things a little.

so last 3 years he averaged 98 games played - 162 games schedule - he missed an average of 64 games - TBRaysFan had it pretty close

The guy jose is most competing with is Jimmy Rollins - 4 years older - and he has played in 155, 88, 142 games over the last 3 years. Averaged 128 games - 30 games more a year is a big deal. I get it that Jose is better when healthy at this point but how does a team pledge over 100mm to a guy who has consistently been hurt. At the end of the day it is a good thing for the mets he won't give a discount. If he did it would hurt the relationship with the fan base more when they do not sign him. Giving him 100+ is like giving Werth 130+ over 7 years - crazy - wait i think somebody did that.....

I see so...you only take the down years to get to that average....so we'll just just forget about the other fours years..

Dude don't become a baseball agent.....you'll never get paid.....

2 thoughts:

1) their are lawyers on the other side as well - and they get paid
2) I did not cherry pick years - I used the most recent 3 - you could use 4 or 5 but at the end of the day he plays less than other star players at his position - and not a small amount less

November 4, 2011  09:37 AM ET

Don't matter to me my Mets are losing him no matter what...all I'm gonna say is he's the best leadoff guy on baseball...If he's on the field your gonna get 60 - 70 extra base hits ..30-60 stolen bases.....there's not another player in the game who's gonna give you that kind of production..he hasn't has bad years he's had hurt years......

Completely agree - and because of that someone will give him 100+ - if i was a met fan i would just be happier spending 110-120mm over the next 2 years on quality pitching.

November 4, 2011  09:43 AM ET

LOL, the last 3 years are the ones that matter. If it was flipped around and he played in 150+ games that last 3 years on average that would mean he's healthy. Face it you don't usually play more the older you get.

Rollins claims he is not giving a discount either. Wants 5 years - if he leaves it could get interesting for Jose

You're right - however in this case - it's an average of 60+ games. Not the 10-20 you would expect - if there are rest days. These were DL days - there's a difference.

Someone is still gonna throw alot of money at him..for the simple reason is he's a game changer......
