08:14 AM ET 11.04 | Two factors work against young starters: age and money. They get older. They get more expensive. Ultimately, difficult decisions must be made. That's precisely where the Giants stand with Tim Lincecum, one year and three days after their shared triumph in Texas. Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez and Ryan Vogelsong are on pace to become free agents after the 2012 season; Lincecum is up the year after that. Meanwhile, an offense that scored the fewest runs in the National League is in need of major upgrades. ... And if the Giants blanch at the going rates in free agency, the most practical move might be to trade Mr. Two-Time Cy Young Award Winner himself. Yes. Lincecum.

They need to make a big splash offensively this offseason, or I could see these young pitchers wanting out of SF. How many games can they be expected to lose 2-1 before they want to go somewhere that will give them some run support.

Agree. He could be one of thos rare 200+ game winners if he was on a team that could score him some runs.

Friend of mine is a huge Giants fan....he's saying this might definitely happen as they have many more good young arms down on the farm supposedly...and after they sign Beltran and Reyes their payroll will be stretched to the limit..........

Maybe the Yankees but not the Phillies. The Phils are in almost the same boat as San Fran. They need hitting even more now that Howard will be out half a year. With their starting pitching why would they drool over Lincecum?

Being a good pitcher on a bad team is the toughest thing in baseball in my opinion. Imagine how much better James Shields would have been in 2011 if my Rays could score more runs.

Not gonna happen. Timmy has good "medicine" to help keep 'em healthy.

Agreed. New York and Boston are in need of another starter. Meanwhile compared to many teams, the Phillies are in great shape with the starting rotation. If Lincecum came on the cheap and/or they had offense to trade for him, I'm sure they'd take him. But he won't and they don't.
Boston and New York meanwhile have the bats they could trade for a starter.

I agree completely. If Posey comes back and Sanchez and Sandoval stay healthy, it will help. However, they need production out of 1B and the outfield to compete. Great pitching doesn't mean squat if you don't score any runs.

Half the teams in baseball would love to have that little stoner pitching for them.

He still looked good and the Rays still did well enough - especially considering the budget.

I think he meant the brittle Reyes and Beltran, not Lincecum.

Speaking of which... That stoner image won't transfer to the Bronx and their button-down look. And I don't see him going under the shears the way Damon did.
