Rinne deal a franchise-altering mistake?

08:23 AM ET 11.04 | The effect of Pekka Rinne's contract on the other two-thirds of Nashville's big three bears watching. [Rinne] is a good goalie, but he's not a seven-year, $49-million goalie. And if David Poile isn't able to sign Ryan Suter and/or Shea Weber because he committed too much salary to Rinne, it will go down as a franchise-altering mistake. All you have to do is look back on past Predator netminders to see how much Barry Trotz's system helps a goalie's stats. Among the guys who've had good seasons playing for ultra-defensive Nashville are Dan Ellis, Chris Mason and Anders Lindback. Rinne's better than all three of those goalies, but $7 million a year? Come on. This isn't rocket science. It's not even bus science.

it was noted yesterday: big money/long term seems to ruin goalies

The Preds have done a great job with drafting/signing, and developing goalies. There was no need to re-sign Rinne when Lindback has shown so much potential and can take over.
Especially considering who there goalie coach is, and who he has on his resume.

Rinne was the most expendable of the 3 big free agents they have.
They would have been best off trading him, and letting Lindback take over as the starter. They would have got a great haul for him in the off-season or even at the trade deadline.

indeed it does. Let's hope that he is the one that breaks it....when Nashville moves and he is playing with them wherever they go

Don't sweat it, Dave. If Rinne, Suter and/or Weber are too much of a burden for you, the Wings can help. :-)

Your goalie got big money and long term deal, he seems pretty good to me. I think Rinne is the real deal and if Nashville wants to stay there and be competetive they had to make this deal.

Come on, if he lets Rinne walk everyone talks about how the Preds can't keep their top players and they should just move to a place where ownership will keep them. They needed to sign their big 3, especially the 2 who will be UFA's this year. They just got one done. Great job by them.

good point but you know what, he was a bit older and more "proven" (lack of harware not withstanding) and not quite as young as Rinne

Actually Henrik was a few years younger and they both had about 3+ yrs in the NHL.... I think you take a chance, but franchise goalies are worth that chance. Rangers are reaping the benefits, and think the Preds will too.

Agree with you Nard. The classic d****d if you do and d****d if you don't. Rinne isn't doing that bad and its better than the Depitro, Bobby Lou fiascos.

This is perfect. They won't be able to sign Weber, which will allow the Flyers to pick him up next year. Nashville will go into a tailspin and in 3 years will be the Quebec Predators.
Nobody expects…

In any sport for that matter. The final years of these deals are always painful then a huge relief once they are finished.

He's more of a 7 mill per yer player than Gomez or Semin or Campbell.

It encourages lack lustre play for sure.
3 years max. Lots of incentives with a decent base.
I have to work hard to get paid and keep my job.
So should these yokels.
