Detroit will fire offensive coordinator Mike Martz after today's season-ending game at Green Bay and replace him with receivers coach Kippy Brown, according to sources familiar with the situation. But Martz won't be out of a job for long. San Francisco is expected to pursue him to take over for offensive coordinator Jim Hostler.

they need to rid of millans sorry ****, they should have done that years ago.

December 30, 2007  08:42 AM ET

millen is the source of this team's woes.

December 30, 2007  09:19 AM ET

Ford and Millen are the problems for this team!!!! HEy ford please sell to someone who cares about winning. Hey millen go back to broadcasting.

December 30, 2007  09:30 AM ET

I place less blame on Millen than I do Ford. It is as if Ford simply wants to field a team and "be in the NFL." Winning or being competitive seems to be something unimportant.

The revenue sharing in the NFL should be based on win-loss records. That would light a fire under ownership's booty, heh. The cap is in place, and the "small market" vs. "large market" dynamics would go away. Imagine someone buying a franchise and moving it to, say, Gary, Indiana. 13-win seasons in a 25,000-seat stadium making more than a team in southern California...

Seriously, though, the owners currently do not have enough incentive to win, unless they plan on selling the team. I wonder what the difference between the revenue share is between the Cowboys and the Panters. I suspect perennial losers in the NFL still make a big enough chunk of change to stick around.

"Panters" is a typo, for all you Carolina fans. If I'd wanted to insult Carolina, I'd have come up with something a little better. ;-)

detroits an awfull ennough place to have a NFL team, dont give em any ideas by suggesting Gary Indiana,,,,,,,omg,,,,,,,,,

December 30, 2007  09:41 AM ET

Blutwolf,
I grew up in Detroit, and you are absolutely right. Ford doesn't care one bit if you win or lose, to him it really is if you just play the game. He makes money regardless of the outcome. Not to mention he's a gazillionaire so it really is and has never been a major source of revenue for him.
The problem is that Detroit has always had a very blue collar die hard football fanbase. We go to the games all the time, we continue to watch year after year, every offseason we fool ourselves by thinking that we "could" make the playoffs this year, we..blue collar Detroiters spend the money for a brand new gorgeous stadium hoping that would kick start them( it worked for the Tigers) then... we get our hearts ripped out every year, by a Lions team, that actually could be better.
It's a disaster, Martz can't take all the blame, but whoa! Somebody has to figure out how to protect a QB or block for a RB. It's been that way for years, and Martz's offense just exagerates those weaknesses. He's a good coach, and could be a head coach again soon. But his offense requires a solid offensive line to run, which we do not have.

just what is it that Martz did to be fired?anyone really know?you can call him what ya like but he is the only guy there with any experience coaching a superbowl team, isnt he?

December 30, 2007  09:48 AM ET

What's next? Another first round wide receiver draft pick?

December 30, 2007  09:52 AM ET

Martz is not the problem. They're getting closer. If anybody goes, it should be Millen. If he had any brains he would have moved up in the draft last year like the Browns did to get Brady Quinn. They need a QB for the future, and some linemen.

December 30, 2007  10:09 AM ET

The answer has always been MILLEN..How many coaches and staffs have to come thru the building before you say gee maybe it is the guy picking them in the first place..Millen must have photos of Ford in a mexican donkey show to be able to keep this job..FIRE the BUM!!!

December 30, 2007  10:18 AM ET

Martz is certainly part of the problem. How many times did our offense put up a really stale game. Martz is a really good offensive coordinator when he has all the pieces he had in St. Louis. He proved inept at adjusting. Sure he put up big passing numbers, but at the expense of scoring points. This team needed more consistency from their offense, and did not get it.

Still, fire Millen.

December 30, 2007  10:30 AM ET

How about a clean sweep with all those idiots! The Lions need to fire all those folks and start anew. Millen and Martz are mirror images of each other, just like Mutt & Jeff. But Mutt & Jeff have alot more class and knowledge. Ops....they're comic characters! Millen and Martz are a joke!

December 30, 2007  10:32 AM ET

RT65.... I agree with your fire Millen but drafting Quinn 1st - - are you serious?

December 30, 2007  10:57 AM ET

This would be a horrible decision. Everywhere Mike Martz goes, he has always had a good offense. I know that the Lions give up a lot of sacks, but half of the sack problem is on the quarterback. Take the Browns as an example. When Charlie Frye played the first half against the Steelers, he was sacked five times, but as soon as Derek Anderson replaced Frye, Anderson hasn't been sacked at all.

December 30, 2007  11:08 AM ET

They are probably getting rid of Martz because Martz rocked the boat there. Martz was the best thing to happen to that coaching staff in a long time.

The Lions have been a joke for too many years. If it's true that Roy Williams is looking to get out, he'd make a heck of a compliment ot Plax.
