How Vijay conquered Kapalua
For Vijay Singh, the Kapalua Plantation Course went from being the site of some of his worst nightmares to Shangri-La in one week last January. After finishing a combined four strokes behind Stuart Appleby at Kapalua during Appleby's three-year win streak from 2004 to 2006 -- and never worse than eighth in eight of the nine Mercedes events played on Maui -- Singh exorcised some demons a year ago as he drove off with the Mercedes Championships trophy for the first time. Singh will return next week to defend his title at the event, now called the Mercedes-Benz Championship. "Well, Kapalua itself, it's a great place," Singh said. "The views, the people, the air, the temperature is just perfect, just like playing golf in my home country (Fiji)." The par-73, 7,411-yard course fits Singh to a tee, especially with his length off the tee and vast knowledge of the venue. "The golf course is very different," Singh said. "You need to know where to hit it and you have to know how hard to play the wind. That was a big factor last year with the wind blowing so strong for all four days. You just had to manage the right way."
