Price for Papelbon may reach $13M

08:10 AM ET 11.09 | Ryan Madson will not be celebrating his reported eight-figure deal deal alone. [Madson] has to be pretty happy with the reported four-year, $44 million deal he's set to receive from the Phillies, but he's not the only one. Jonathan Papelbon can't be too torn up by the deal, either. If Madson is worth $11 million a year, Papelbon -- slightly younger with better stats and more experience -- should be looking at at least $13 million per season. Of course, there's going to be one less big-money team bidding for his services, but there should due enough out there that allows Papelbon to cash in as the market's top free agent closer.

Papelbon is younger than Madson?? Had no idea. Lot of money to give to someone who will only give about 50, maybe 60 innings.

Madson isn't even 90 days older than Papelbon.

Here are some of their stats over the last three years:

Madson: 191 IP ~ 2.78 ERA ~ 1.15 WHIP ~ 9.6 K/9 ~ 4.0 K/BB ~ 147 ERA+
Papelbon: 199 IP ~ 2.89 ERA ~ 1.12 WHIP ~ 10.8 K/9 ~ 3.9 K/BB ~ 154 ERA+

Papelbon probably will get a better contract that Madson did, but it won't be because he's younger or has better stats.

Stay with the Sox so the Yankees can bash you next year. Bet none of the usual whiners on this site won't say a word when someone other than the Yankees overpay for a free agent this year.

So you think all of the usual whiners on this site will say a word when someone other than the Yankees overpay for a free agent this year?

He's fun to play with.

If I remember correctly, he claims to be in Japan. He says a lot of stupid crap about the Yankees.

He also claims to have slept with Yu Darvish.

Last year in 8 games vs the Yankees Pappelbon was 4 for 4 in saves, 14 K's and 1 BB in 9.1 innings, and the Yankees batted .125. That's some real bashing.

I'd like to see the Yankees sign Papelbon, convert him to an 8th inning reliever, and ruin his career.

I thought that's what the Yankees were planning with Buehrle.

They're just letting him sign a one day contract so he can retire a Yankee. It's always been his dream.

I heard the Yankees were doing that for any civilian who was actually willing to pay them, kind of like the Russian Space Tourist Program, or CCCPSP.
