Kentucky fans boo Gillispie

There is growing unrest in the Commonwealth after Kentucky and new coach Billy Gillispie lost to San Diego, 81-72, in Lexington on Saturday to drop below .500 on the season with a 5-6 record. That's 6-8, now 7-8, San Diego from the West Coast Conference, the team with a new coach, Billy Grier, that hadn't beaten anyone of note. Maybe that Gardner-Webb rout wasn't a fluke. Kentucky, one of the most storied programs in college basketball history, has now lost five of its last six games for the first time since the 1979-80 season. Many in the stunned crowd of 23,756 at Rupp Arena were booing on the way out and questioning the team's effort and coaching decisions. "I really don't have anything to say to Kentucky fans," Gillispie said. "I couldn't disagree very much with the way we played. I think we're getting better, and I thought we'd perform better, but we didn't."

Kentucky fans, I'm absolutely, positively, no doubt about it, sure that y'all think Tubby wasn't so bad after all!

LOL

Kentucky fans deserve what they get. they wanted a new coach and they got the hotshot they wanted.

LOL

This guy isnt going to last the season. He should have stayed at A&M ... he had more talent there.

December 31, 2007  08:49 AM ET

Tubby was a good coach and they will find that out this year. Kentucky is a great program but you have to have a decent leader. He may still work out but that program will not give him time to develop. He has to win now or it will be a short job.

December 31, 2007  09:22 AM ET

Let's Go Gophers!

Will they have a new name for the new coach (i.e. Gazillion Loss Gillispie)

December 31, 2007  10:08 AM ET

What do you expect from Kentucky? Tubby left the team with almost zero talent. Two of their good players are injured (Jasper and Meeks). And the lone bright spot for the team (Patterson) was recruited by Gillispie. Most Kentucky fans realize that Gillispie needs time to revive this program from the shambles that tubby left it in.

Most like to see the Wildcats down because we've beaten the hell out of their team for so long. Dont worry, UK will be back. And we will beat the hell out of your team again.

December 31, 2007  10:35 AM ET

you get what you deserve, you KY klowns ran Tubby out of town for no really good reason. I hate kentucky, hahaha!

December 31, 2007  10:42 AM ET

Get your kicks and digs in now folks, in a couple of years Kentucky will be back, and will be a MONSTER again. I hope Gillispie is keeping a "pay-back" list - and that it includes the ignorant 5% of Kentucky "fans" that are dogging him right now. Gillispie WILL bring #8, and likely #9, #10....To Lexington.

December 31, 2007  10:44 AM ET

Tubby knew when to get out of town. His inability to recruit and develop players was catching up to him. Take a look, its all his players on the court now! (Except for Patterson). Billy Clyde will have UK rocking once again in the very near future, now that they have a coach in town that can recruit.

December 31, 2007  10:48 AM ET

Typical Tubby Team last night VS UNLV. Any of his teams that plays another team with at least a smidget of talent, they get blown away.

Tubbys the only coach in america that can take a Burger Boy and turn it into a Gas Station Cheeseburger.

December 31, 2007  11:41 AM ET

His "inability to recruit" has landed him the best recruiting class the Gophers have had in a long time, and that w/out a full season. And he took over a program that was in a bigger mess than KU is this season and has them playing better. So far I'm not seeing anything to indicate that Tubby can neither recruit nor coach.

What I am seeing is that my old impressions of KU fans as being knowledgeable about basketball are in need of re-evaluation. Booing Gillespie when "it's all Tubby's fault for leaving the program in shambles"...y'all need to get your stories straight.

Frankly, I think Gillespie will do fine at KU, meaning about the same as Tubby. And Tubby will have the Gophers near the top of the Big 10. Three years from now, they'll have eerily similar programs. And KU fans will talk about how they both suck.

December 31, 2007  12:04 PM ET

K.U. fans got exactly what they asked for. For all those folks that say Tubby left a bad team behind. Uhmmm, I do recall him taking his teams to the big show. True they didn't go very far, but he did win with them so the argument suggesting that he left a team in shambles is bogus... at best.

Just like Stewart2525 said, "Get your story straight".

Gee... I wonder how those Gophers are doing?

December 31, 2007  12:21 PM ET

I really did think Tubby should have stayed.I was one of the few to back him up.And I understand Gillespie is a great coach but I don't think he is doing a good job right now.Once his recruiting classes come in we will be back at the top

December 31, 2007  12:26 PM ET

Ha! Thanks for running Tubby out of town! We Love Him here in Gopher Country!

December 31, 2007  12:27 PM ET

Oh, keep in mind Tubby is bringing a top 5 recruiting class to MN next year, not KY!

December 31, 2007  12:31 PM ET

KU = Kansas
UK = Kentucky

When are people ever going to get this straight!!!

December 31, 2007  12:31 PM ET

Gillispie has problems besides coaching. Rumor has it that he's had to hire a chauffer to stay out of trouble (likes to party and get behind the wheel). Supposedly he's had people placing "for sale" signs in his yard for him. This guy is in trouble.

By the way, it's UK, not KU. I live in Kentucky, and am not a Wildcats fan (Go Duke!), but at least get it right, guys.
