McNeill's long road to Tour
After eight failed tries at the PGA Tour Qualifying School, George McNeill thought his competitive golf days were over when he took a job as an assistant professional at Forest Country Club in Fort Myers, Fla. Then he spent seven months on the job. "I was there four days a week, open to close," McNeill said. "I was there at 6 a.m. and I left at 6 p.m. four days a week, so there was a lot of fun, but it's something I definitely do not ever want to do again. That's what drove me back, got my competitive juices flowing again, and I had a little different mind-set when I came back out." McNeill was at Forest Country Club from November 2005 to June 2006. In November 2006, he won the Q-School title by five strokes, the largest margin since 1997. This week he is at the Kapalua Plantation Course for the Mercedes-Benz Championship, the PGA Tour's season-opener for winners only.
