Penn State's quarterback battle

It may have taken awhile, but Daryll Clark finally caught Anthony Morelli. In Penn State's 24-17 win over Texas A&M in Saturday's Alamo Bowl, Clark, the backup quarterback to Morelli, added a wrinkle to the Nittany Lions' attack and showed that he may have the inside track on the starting position for next season. Clark, who is expected to get a redshirt season should he complete his spring semester credits, will most likely battle redshirt freshman Pat Devlin for the spot. Joe Paterno, while not ruling out a two-quarterback system, said the job was up for grabs.

Amen - the Morelli era is over.

I wish it would have been up for grabs this year, Morelli killed our season.

I like how the announcers during our bowl game said..."Kinlaw is explosive, where has he been for 5 years?!". I hate JoePas seniority system.

My wife went to PSU so the last 3 years I have started to follow them. I do not care how "highly ranked a QB" Morelli was, fact is he stunk. He made a team that had a chance to win every game, a team with a chance to lose every game.

no mo morelli. thank GOD! and the seniority system had nothing to do with kinlaw not starting for five years. larry johnson his freshman and sophmore year were ahead of him, and tony hunt his junior and senior, and this year was supposed to be Austin Scott. but he started this year, so thats why we went 5 years without him...

Larry Johnson was a victim of the seniority system. We got 2 seasons out of him and that was it.

If they have a good attitude, there's no problem with a 2 QB system if its done right, particularly with youg QBs in college. Has been done successfully many times.

it not only helps disrupt the defense, Coaches have noted it helps to have additional time to coach the QB on the sielines to pick apart a defense

How old is Paterno's son? 67?

January 1, 2008  10:29 PM ET

Get real buckeyedude, he can't be day over 65.

January 2, 2008  06:21 AM ET

The real question is ... what will Morelli do now that his playing days are over and the Sopranos aren't filming anymore?

January 2, 2008  11:25 AM ET

Boy, what loyalty from the PSU fans. With "fans" like that, who in his right mind would want to play at Happy Valley?

January 2, 2008  12:45 PM ET

Loyalty comes when deserved. Morelli, though he did put up 2,000 yards in back-to-back seasons (how did he do that....?), never became a good decision maker, as shown by some bad interceptions this season.

I personally would like to see Clark as QB next year. Imagine what Penn State would be with two years of a Michael Robinson. Add in Royster, the receivers (who may not have to fight cornerbacks for poorly thrown passes anymore), Lee, and the rest of the defensive starters, and a good season looks to be in the making for Penn State.

January 2, 2008  12:55 PM ET

I agree, how did Morelli have back-to-back 2000 yard seasons?

January 2, 2008  10:15 PM ET

Morelli did a great job the past two years. It is not his fault that the coaching staff put him in a virtual no-win situation. They tried to stuff him in an offense that he did not fit in, it is as simple as that. He will be a mid-round pick in next spring's draft and be a better NFL QB than fellow Big Ten QB Chad Henne. He has all the tools, he just needs some coaching.

Sorry guy, Morelli was horrible. I'm not sure how you can even argue that he wasn't. He was in a system that suited him just fine. The kid just had incredibly bad decision making abilities. Period. He threw for over 2,000 yards because he had Norwood, Butler, Williams, and Golden. A truly good QB should have won a national title with those WRs, those RBs, and that amazing Defense.

I like Clark, but his inaccuracy scares me. (Reference one Anthony Morelli.) I think Devlin's going to be great but may need another year. Hopefully Clark can steer the team in the right direction in the mean time.

WE ARE!! PENN STATE!!
