Penn State's Joe Paterno believes his son has got the ability to be a head coach. However, don't look for Jay, the Nittany Lions' quarterbacks coach, to replace his famous 81-year-old father when he retires. "I don't think Penn State would be a good place for him right now, because it's just tough," the elder Paterno said yesterday, less than 12 hours after the Nittany Lions beat Texas A&M, 24-17, in the Alamo Bowl. "It would be as if I programmed the whole thing." Paterno was asked if he thought it would be best if Jay, who has his own critics, moved on to another program to forge his own identity. He spent time at James Madison, Connecticut and Virginia before being hired at Penn State in 1995.

JoPa is just wording things nicely. From QB coach to head coach of a major Div 1 school? Don't think so...

December 31, 2007  01:07 PM ET

No chance of this happening.

A lot of us already want JayPa fired.

December 31, 2007  01:14 PM ET

It'll be Greg Schiano. How many times must we go through this???

December 31, 2007  06:03 PM ET

im wit you eastcoastkeith...it would be a good hire unless they wanna give the job to galen hall.

December 31, 2007  06:26 PM ET

I'm with EastCoastKeith; anybody but Greg Schianb wouldn't make sense! Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy New Year EastCoast Keith!!!

As much as I want it to be Schiano, it won't be. It will be Tom Bradley. That's how Penn State and Joe Paterno do things.

IMO a son should never follow his father at the same school playing or coaching, the pressure and expectations are too unrealistic. It would be better if Jay Paterno would leave PSU next season and try to make it on his own!

January 1, 2008  11:24 AM ET

I agree with Penn Stater. PSU would never benefit from Jay having more reign over that program when he can't even get the job done right now.

i agree wit prove it.from qb to head coach, maybe a coordinater or something! especially there!

January 2, 2008  12:50 PM ET

Please no! Penn State wouldn't have enough money to buy X-boxes for everybody to practice with.

Tom Bradley does not even want the job. Greg Schiano will be coaching the Nittany Lions in 09.
