Scandal will ruin Penn State

08:23 AM ET 11.10 | Happy Valley has become a very unhappy place. Call this insanity because that's what it is. But don't think Penn State football is going to skate because the NCAA has no rule that covers harboring alleged child molesters. This case has already started taking care of itself. "The NCAA is not going to have to do anything," said a BCS official speaking anonymously because of the sensitive nature of the situation. "They can sit back and watch the house burn down." Penn State's Board of Trustees tossed the first match Wednesday night, firing its iconic head coach along with the university's president. Penn State football as we know it is officially over.

I'm traveling this week. Overheard this at breakfast and wanted to get your reaction. Concerning the PSU situation, a guy stated, "Major college football programs are just like many other institutions in America, public and private. For the most part, in the zeal and pressure to succeed and get results, they have sold the principals out and willing to ignore integrity. They are nothing more than a reflection of all of us. We have demanded such." Thoughts?

They are going to have to bring a coach out of retirement to come for a few years. It'll have to be someone with nothing to lose.

No top level coach would go there now, and no up and comer is going to want to try their hand at that place.

It sounds crazy, but I really think they shoul try to get Fulmer to come up there for a few years.

This will be years to complete all the debris and law suits. And some involved could see some jail time.
No one to blame but themselves. Top down, including Jo Pa, through to the Board of Trustees to their President. A lot of people knew and a lot of people impeded investigations. Crimes to conceal crime.

It is one thing to break and abuse NCAA rules, this is about State and Federal laws. That is the difference.

Sounds about right. Although it is false to an extent-we still are forgiving of honest mistakes that are acknolwedged and corrected quickly and if PSU would have done the right thing in 1998 it would have been a two or three day local news story instead of what we have now.

Do ya think so? Genius!

Yep.

Apples and Oranges

This case is now the province of the legal system, not the NCAA. But Penn State will rise again, though it'll take time. There are a lot of Penn State faithful out there. I'm not saying this is right or wrong; it is what it is.

Same old same old. It wasn't the crime that created this big of a mess, it was the cover up.
And that took a LOT of PSU personnel to pull off..

They'll promote Galen Hall or Tom Bradley. It'll be someone from within.

The only part of that i have an issue with is the "all of us part" If it was stated alot, i could go with that.

That is exactly the urge I had to respond but was not part of their conservation so I held my tongue. There are still principled people around. They may not be as valued as those that get results with questionable tactics, but they are still around. Not all believe the ends justify any and all means.

Not so fast... PSU still has some pretty good players. I believe that there are many HC's that would take the job and that will be decided over the winter. Come next fall, a new sheriff will be in town and resume PSU's winning ways. Heck, most people thought Paterno was out after this year anyway.

True. The turn around does not take long. Perfect example: Vick from zero to hero and winning awards.
Politicians do it all the time and we vote them back in. We are a curious lot.

Sin and redemption--the oldest story there is.

If SMU got the "Death Penalty" for paying players then what in the world should Penn State get harboring a child molester?

Seriously, they should maybe just voluntarily shut the program down for a year or two and let the stench of this subside. At the very least the NCAA should let any current players transfer without sitting.
