08:11 AM ET 11.11 | Hall of Famer Bill Russell believes that a more conciliatory tone might help end the lockout. [Russell] said a solution to the NBA lockout is being jeopardized by hard-liners on both sides, and urged the parties to put aside their differences and reach a compromise "they can live with." "As a very interested bystander, I just hope they get a deal," Russell told CBSSports.com in a phone interview. "And it will not come from the hard-liners on either side. I think they all know that. I have this theory that hard-liners are like true believers. And true believers think that any compromise is a retreat. And moving forward, that doesn't cut it."

There are probably a number of players waking up, scratching themselves and wondering who the hell is Bill Russell.

I bet if he were a part owner with Michael Jordan he would be taking a different stance. Great way to get your name in the paper Bill.

Players now are cornered. I am glad the owners finely said "that's enough". This thing is just dragging for too long. Hopefully we can get the deal approved early next week or then forget about this season for good.

Apparently Russell is not a fan of the Kevin Garnett school of negotiating.
