06:30 AM ET 11.12 | Through all the entertaining anecdotes in the new Shaquille O'Neal book about his clashes with Kobe Bryant (and Pat Riley and LeBron James and Big Baby and...) there is another, darker episode. There is Shaq's upbringing, and how his father physically and mentally abused him. Phillip Harrison, Shaq's military-member father, crossed the line from raising a tough child to abuse, according to Jackie MacMullan, who wrote the book with Shaq. And he crossed it a lot, she said. "It gets lost in the shuffle because people want to talk about Kobe, Pat Riley, and LeBron and all these other famous people, but another fascinating part of this book is his father. "Sarge," Phillip Harrison, who, frankly, abused him all the way through his life. Physically abused him, beat the living daylights out of him at every turn. We're not talking about spanking. We're talking about a belt. Beating him badly. Something that disturbed his mother greatly. Of course, Shaq's mom and his dad aren't together any more. I think that's in part why. Sarge was a military guy, that's how his father raised him, and that's how he was going to raise his son. I don't think he thinks there's anything wrong with it still..."

Shaq was 6-9 225 pounds in 6th grade. I don't buy it. Its amazing how everything comes out in a book.

I have this memory when the Lakers won their first title with Shaq to see him running to the stands and hug and kissing his dad during the celebration. Now he is saying that.
Not sure what to think. If he wants to go after his dad now on the book why he displayed so much affection back then if he disregard him?

Yeah, I guess we need to read the book to figure that out.
I am just not interested in doing it. While I like Shaq, think he is funny and appreciate the 3 rings he brought to the Lakers, I am not fond of his antics and the way he trashed almost all franchises he played with.
Shaq needs to look inside himself and come to the realization he did screw up big time. It's not just everybody else's fault as he usually like to say.

Well Shaq became quite the mercenary after he left the Lakers. LA didn't want to pay a center that was always coming into the season out of shape and over weight. So the shipped him the the Heat.
The Heat win one championship with him and pay Shaq his big bucks that he wanted. But once the team went into the toilet, Shaq was hurt, over weight, paid to much, and wanted out. On to the Sun were a merical happened were the injured Shaq was ready to play. Then the Sun started to go down hill and Shaq went to the Cav's to help the "king" win a title. And we all know how that turned out. And last stop Boston where Shaq's mouth kept talking about how good he was, but he could hardly run up the court because he was so out of shape.
Had Shaq ever had the drive that Kobe had to stay in shape. Shaq would have helped those teams win. But he was a fat out of shape mercenary that talked a better game then he could play. He was just living on his reputation.

That really is the winner when you're trying to sell a book, isn't it? Parental abuse. Interesting observation by Jackie MacMullan, the author, "another fascinating part of this book". Says who? How about more throwing under the bus by the worlds biggest gas bag? Yeah. That works.

Absolutely. Forgot about that. Great observation. If you're not sure what to think, consider the source. This dude Shaq is a low life hemorrhoid.

Am I Missing something? It says shaqs dad used to spank him with a belt... That classifies as beating and adult abuse these days? A belt whoopin or havin to get a switch isn't beating, it's adequate punishment. I half expected this story to have more merit than him gettin belt spanked

All the bleeding hearts want to give children time outs now. You can't raise your had to a kid, or its abuse. Funny how the more we treat our kids like sissies, the worse they turn out.
