Former Yankee slugger Jim Leyritz expressed condolences Monday to the family of a Florida woman he allegedly killed in a drunken driving crash. Leyritz released a statement through his lawyer, Jeffrey Ostrow, marking the first time he's publicly acknowledged the Friday accident that claimed the life of Fredia Ann Veitch, 30, a mother of two. "Due to the tragic and unfortunate events of Dec. 28, 2007, Leyritz and his family wish to express their deepest sympathies and condolences" to the Veitch family, Ostrow said. Ostrow declined further comment, except to say he was Leyritz's friend and lawyer. A lawyer for Veitch's family, Richard Abramowitz, offered a terse reaction, saying the woman's loved ones "are upset, and rightfully so." Veitch's heartbroken husband, Jordan, and her two children, ages 5 and 13, were preparing for her memorial service today.

ok, so he didn't break his silence. He hid behind his lawyer.

Who cares whether he is sorry or not? It was more important to him to get drunk and drive than it was to think about the safety of the people on the road. If cops wanted to, they could go to every bar in a section of a city and arrest people left and right for drunk driving over the limit. If you drive to the bar, and you get a drink, how else does anyone think they are getting home? HIs dumb @-S-S decision cost somone their life, and will affect the lives of her children and husband forever. He deserves to rot in prison. Being sorry doesn't bring a mother back . . . .

miss you? I'm sorry, were you ever gone?? ;)

January 2, 2008  09:55 AM ET

did you every see the movie What About Bob? You remind me of him :D

Gone? You think he's gone? He's not gone! That's the whole point! HE'S NEVER GONE! ... :D

Sometimes the victims care for an apology, sometimes they don't. Pretty sure this will have nothing to do with the prosecution or the following civil suit. It does make him more of a person and has no effect, right now, on anything other than that.

Typical hide behind the lawyer/PR agent scheme employed by, among others, Pettitte and Clemens.

So, Hitman, what's your opinion of Leonard Little of the Rams, who not only hit and killed a wife and mother while at nearly twice the legal limit, he got another DUI afterwards and is still free?

BTW, I think Leyritz should do some jail time.

January 2, 2008  11:50 AM ET

Leyritz is a freakin clown, I hope he rots

January 2, 2008  11:51 AM ET

Its manslaughter....gotta have some time in the stockade!

As a person in long term recovery from alcoholism, I sympathize with Leyritz' condition but cannot forgive the damage that comes from his choices without appropriate punishment.

You get behind the wheel impaired, bad things are likely to happen. Hit a mailbox, lose your license. Take a life, go to jail.

Caso...yes!!!!!!

January 2, 2008  12:32 PM ET

Leyritz always looked good wearing stripes. I can't wait until he is behind bars. What he did was just awful.

January 2, 2008  01:32 PM ET

Yes, he is hiding behind his laywer, you would too. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law."

I think he should be forking over any mlb pension and remaining cash, something has to be done, no compensation would be fair but none would be wrong.

Leyritz, anyone can have an accident, but you had a warrant for not paying a previous ticket, when you got busted. And now you were drinking and driving and children are without a mother. Your responsibility and behavior is obviously out of focus. A significant amount of trauma, a wake up call, so to speak, in the form of jail time, is an appropriate cure for what ails you.

NIck Ryder,

I have made a comment about Little before. I dont think he should have been able to keep playing in the league. For some reason athletes and stars can committ crimes and go about their business like nothing happened. He makes enough to afford a driver, there is no reason why he should have been driving. The Rams should have cutt him, but once again he was their best defensive player so they found a way to forgive him . . .

this is exactly why we need tougher laws in the US. Other countries have implemented very tough drunk driving laws and the deaths decrease dramatically. People who drive drunk are a public nuisance and danger to society. Innocent victims get killed everyday b/c someone is selfish.

The scary thing is that everyone knows that there are plenty more drivers out there that don't get caught. And if they don't get caught, they try it again.

This is one reason why I avoid driving after dark.

An eye for an eye. Street justice for a man released on $11,000 bail....for vehicular murder. And eye for an eye. Sit him in a car and let another SUV hit him at the same speed, at the same point of impact.
