Mets leery of long-term deal for Reyes

08:18 AM ET 11.16 | A day that began with an offer to Jose Reyes ended with the Mets facing the decision to change that offer or watch him play for a division rival. [Multiple] Mets insiders described the team's reaction as two-fold: 1.) They believed the the process was still in its early phases, and 2.) Six years still did not sound particularly appealing. Ever since mid summer, people familiar with the team's plans have asserted that the Mets are unwilling to offer Reyes six or seven years. On Tuesday, there seemed to be a subtle softening of that tone -- no one would rule out a six-year deal -- but there was still much talk of concern related to Reyes' hamstring injuries.

6 years, $90 million is one rumor I had heard he was requesting. I am actually surprised he's not asking for more...

$15 mil a year is nothing to sneeze at....one thing though is if this is the offer it actually keeps the Mets in the ballpark.....

And that's his game....I'd say three years is ok.

I remember Derek Jeter sitting the last couple games of 2008 because he was batting .300. One could argue it was to stay "fresh", but one could also argue that he didn't want his average to go below .300. Would you call Derek Jeter gutless and classless?

Ironic thing here. The Mets are worried about a 6 year deal and Reyes' health during that time frame. If they were to let him walk, they will likely go through another 20 shortstops before they find one as complete (offensively and defensively) as him. Letting him go opens up more holes on a team that already looks like a block of Finlandia. I will be thoroughly disgusted if we don't get this done.

I would be more worried about the Mets long term. Looks like they have some pitching, but do they realize that when you move those fences in that the other team gets to bat too?

I'm with you on that one. No one would do the Ted Williams thing when he was putting his .400 avg in danger in the last game of the season.

If I were Reyes I'd take the Marlins deal. Thats my opinion, but who am I? Any other team willing to give him more years is insane.

That was pretty awful of someone to do.

Reyes should leave the Mets solely because they were so eager to make David Wright the "face of the franchise" when Reyes was a better player. They should overrpay Wright and watch his highs and lows with his 2-week hot streak, 2-week slump career.

I agree! I would go further and say that if the team does not sign Reyes, Met fans should not pay ro go see the team play. I feel really bad for David Wright and if Jason Bay does not wake up from his nightmare the team really will be BAD! I saw another comment that the team has pitching, what pitching? And they are moving the fences in. I just laugh, HAHAHA!

They should sign him and trade him to get something for him.
