Kessel finally getting his due

08:24 AM ET 11.22 | There was a time, believe it or not, that Phil Kessel was compared more than favorably to Sidney Crosby. [Kessel's emergence] as a possible National Hockey League star is the story that trumps all that isn't Crosby. His rise to this level -- as leading goal scorer, leading point getter in the NHL -- for as long as it lasts has been completely unexpected. The tendency is to believe this cannot continue. ... But he's never had a streak that was this good, this long, this focused, this dominant. He's hasn't shown this kind of star potential, this kind of on-ice authority, since he was compared with Sidney Crosby as a teenager.

As a die-hard Leafs fan (read certifiable), even I found this a little bit much.

I wonder if the CBC would preempt their programming to show a hockey game with Stay Puft returning fron an injury?

No? I didn't think so.

M-V-P! M-V-P! M-V-P!

Of course.

Next time he misses a single game, his return will be on the CBC coast to coast.

Besides, does CBC will have any programming besides hockey and Dragon's Den? The rest of their programming sucks.

Damn, I thought the Crosby article was bad.

I look at the +- number and only see a 6. Funny that a player that is as legendarily great as The Kessel wouldn't have a +- in the top, oh, I don't know, 50 or so. He's still a massive liability if he isn't scoring because his idea of defense is going back to the red line and watching.

Once the scoring slows down, and it will because the Leafs suck, the -20 Kessel will emerge and articles like this will be replaced with the "Was Kessel worth trading for" articles, especially if Seguin keeps up his start. Oh, Seguin is a +15 right now.

Ha. That is some funny stuff.

I will say I am shocked how good Kessel has been playing. He is probably the most streaky play in the NHL, and I thought at the beginning of the year that this was another one of his streak. It still could be, but it has been the longest of his career so far.

That's what you get when you play on a crappy team with crappy goaltending. Of course his +/- is gonna be bad.

I will say that Kessel this year is starting to final play D. He is actually back-checking with his great speed, and doing some stuff in his own end. He is also not afraid to be hit any more or go into the corners. He isn't perfect, but far better than before.

Always liked Kessel. Good for him, and I hope he continues to do well. Guess who won't be last to be picked in the All-Star draft this season?

How can the article state Kessel finally getting his due? Boston fans thank him every time he plays there. "Thank you Kessel" :-)

November 22, 2011  09:16 AM ET

This still makes me laugh.

Told ya. :-)

Yes, we certainly do thank him every time he's in town. It is evident that Seguin has more talent than Kessel. His creativeness with the puck is unmistakeable. He is blossoming into a great 2-way player and is earning lots of time on the PP.

"Kessel finally getting his due"

Does that mean he's getting another car at the All Star game?

He will if you want to actually win.

The early tee-time is a foregone conclusion.
