Sutter and Iginla aren't on the same page

08:30 AM ET 11.23 | Brent Sutter has talked a lot about a team game lately, but are he and his captain pulling in different directions? Notice Jarome Iginla's reaction when asked about transformations -- specifically, Steve Yzerman's from point-producer to two-way fixture. ... "If I turned into a pure defensive player, I don't think you're going to say that that's exactly what our team needs." Oh. Player and coach may be reading from the same book. But the same page? Not exactly. Neither is getting what he wants. Neither can be happy. Lose-lose so far. Because if Iginla is bent on total offence, it's not evident -- judging by the points (nine). Because if Sutter wants three-zone toil from Iginla, that's hardly apparent -- judging by the rating (minus-12).

So who needs a winger and has tradeable assets?

Boston has the cap room, and prospects.

Yeah but is there a need? It'd be a very un-Chiarelli like trade.

Then again, he did give up a swarm for Kaberle...

it's time to do jarome a favor and get him out of calgary...hey Sutter, send iginla to montreal for gomez and a pick...win win

It's time to Calgary a favour and get rid of Sutter.

He doesn't want to become a "pure defensive player" but that's not what they're asking him to become. All they want is for him to play both ends of the ice. I don't think that's too much to ask.

His back is injured. Hopefully they are not talking about it because they want a trade for a pick and a prospect-NOT GOMEZ !!

Can Sutter just go? Their like cockroaches...you get rid of one and another pops up

In the end, Sutter will be the biggest loser.

In a word? No! Because, as with cockroaches, for every Sutter you see, there are at least five you do not see!

November 23, 2011  11:17 AM ET

It seems like a fair request to want your best player to play some defence. You can't fault Sutter for that.

I know! It seems like they just hang out under the fridge at the Saddledome waiting for their chance to make a coaching or GM appearance.

Like them or not their story is pretty good. Six brothers who palyed in the NHL 3 were captains and share 6 rings and now the second generation is starting to kick in. If some of the Flames players worked as hard as the Sutters did they might not be in the prediciment they are in.

For a one way player who has 5 goals, 4 assists and is a minus 12? How about a case of LaBlatts and a bag of pucks.

Except as coaches and GM's they **** the bed here in Calgary....Too bad talent on the ice doesn't always translate into coaching and management. It isn't hard work they're missing it's youth and talent. They have no prospects and a geriatric team. As for coaching, they want to play a certain style that doesn't fit with the talent they have (round peg square hole type deal) but the Sutter's just seem to try and ram it in there even if it isn't/hasn't worked in years.

I don't disagree with that and your assessment of the Flames is spot on. Duhryl was a terrble GM and along with Ken King sewered the team. Brent hasn't had much to work with thanks to Duhryl so I don't if he is a bad coach or not. I am a big fan of Iggy but this not the first time we have heard this story coming out of Calgary that he has to be better defensively.

Don't worry HC, I don't want to see Gomez in Calgary, I want him to ride the bus in the AHL.

Burkie, on the other hand, still has most of his picks for the next draft....

How about Kipper?

Is he on the way out too?

He is saving those for when Columbus finally comes to their senses and trades Nash.
