08:25 AM ET 11.24 | While perhaps not a red carpet, the Red Sox are rolling out an avenue for the return of Big Papi. The Red Sox made a significant overture to free agent David Ortiz [Wednesday] by offering him salary arbitration. Ortiz has until Dec. 7 to accept or decline. If he accepts, he would be Red Sox property for 2012. If the two sides could not come to an agreement, a one-year contract would be determined via arbitration. The Red Sox also offered arbitration to right-handed reliever Dan Wheeler, a Type B free agent. If Ortiz signs with another team, the Red Sox would receive two draft picks as compensation. ... Erik Bedard, Trever Miller, Tim Wakefield, J.D. Drew, Conor Jackson and Jason Varitek were not offered arbitration.

I think he'll get a higher annual salary thru arbitration than he would thru Free Agency.

Seems like a win - win for the Bosox.....sign him and they have their DH for next ..if not they'll get 2 draft picks for an aging slugger....who knows the next great Red Sox could be one of those draft picks....

I do like this face-saving deal. Boston's telling Papi that they'll accept what an outside, objective party considers fair. And if not... Yes, I agree that two draft picks for an incredible but aging slugger is a good deal. That's frankly a better deal than the lower-ranking draft picks that Boston gets from the Phillies for letting Papelbon go.

Apparently the Fenway Franchise is learning the lessons of "value" that The Rays have been teaching the rest of the AL East.

the red sox should had sign their closer, the only excuse would have being if just if they didn't have a GM!!!

the manager its important, but the right promotion management should be accurate, valintine would be puzzle to gamble on him, it seems as if in this year whomever ends wityhout a manager in the beginning or at the middle of the season, should promote a new rookie manager!!
