Big East talking to San Diego St.

07:57 AM ET 11.28 | San Diego State has entered discussions with the Big East Conference about joining that league's proposed western division, a source with knowledge of the situation said. The talks became more serious after negotiations broke down between the Big East and Brigham Young, which also had considered joining the league as a football-only member. SDSU Athletic Director Jim Sterk declined comment on the status of the talks with the Big East. If SDSU joined, it likely wouldn't happen until at least 2013 and probably would be for football only, forcing the Aztecs to find another conference home for its other sports, possibly the Big West. SDSU's current conference, the Mountain West, likely would not want to house SDSU's other sports if SDSU defected in football.

Looking for Armpit's take on this move. Just from a geographical and logistics standpoint, this idea is ludicrous.

The whole college football realignment mess is ludicrous HM.

Just look at how much quality improved by adding Colorado and Utah to the 12PAC south! It brought out the best in that UCLA football powerhouse.

And this would validate maintaining it as a BCS conference. I think not. Enough is enough, the NCAA needs to step in and say no more.

Is it really up to the NCAA? BCS is controlled by the Bowls and ESPN. They both like the current system.

Word. So when are you heading back out to the Borderland, DC?

I'm pretty much relegated to only visiting any more. (and the twice a year work trips) Both daughters/three grandkids are in the Fort Worth area. We are living back in our old home town in order to take care of aging parents. I do miss the EP weather and a lot of the people. I don't miss the traffic from living in the city...any city. I hate driving in Fort Worth when I visit. But you avoid most of the traffic issues living in the Mesilla Valley, huh?

So you just have to be East of Hawaii?

As a person of native american descent, I find that picture offensive.

Just think... if SDSU says no, the Big Least can extend an invitation to Hawaii and REALLY spread out the geography. Then toss an invite to Alaska-Anchorage, as well.

Agree completly. Jumping onto a sinking ship is never that great of an idea, especially since it looks like in 2014 there is a strong chance that there will be no AQs anymore.

Not sure why you would-SDSU always gets buff dudes that are decended from that area in central Mexico and gives them sweet warrior gear. I could see objecting if it were some 350lb donut eating dude with a fake spear, but the dude and the gear is as authentic as it can be as far as I know.

SDSU is exactly what the BE already has in spades-a decent team (even if only recently) that looks to be somewhere btwn 4-8 and 8-4 most years. The only reason the BE wants SDSU is to have the numbers to have a CC game.

This move is interesting in one way-I bet a bi-coastal conference would end up with more parity, as home field would be much larger of a deal than for smaller conferences. Traveling 24+ hours for a few games a year probably would result in a loss or two that otherwise would not have occured-you can see this effect easily in the W-L record for Hawaii at home and on the road.

why not just call it the BIG conference and have a Big East and a Big West divisions. Put as many of the good midmajors in there as possible (BSU, BYU, Fresno, Nevada, Houston, etc etc along with Louisville, Cinicinatti, USF, ECU etc etc) and give 'em an autobid. Make the conf at least 16 teams though.
