Cubs interested in both Pujols and Prince

08:18 AM ET 11.29 | In a city famous for "Let's play two," Chicago may be bidding for a pair of the biggest fish in the pond? The Cubs are pursuing both Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder, and not simply because the free-agent first basemen are difference-makers. No, the Cubs also are acknowledging two emerging realities -- a dwindling number of sluggers available in future free-agent markets, and the restrictions on spending in the amateur draft under baseball's new collective-bargaining agreement. New Cubs president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer have made it clear that they intend to rebuild the team. However, the Cubs are indeed showing interest in both Pujols and Fielder, major league sources say.

Almost all teams have interest in these two. The question remains how much money are you interested in parting with.

This seems to be at odds with a team also looking to deal their best pitcher in another thread today. Are you rebuilding with youth or veterans? You have to make up your mind before dealing valuable veteran arms.

I don't see Pujols playing for anyone but the Cards.

I do.

Money does some crazy things to people. Like leaving the Cardinals.

Both at the same time?!!! Whoa!!!

They Cubs clearly need both of them and thus need to give them a combined $400 million. That should win them a championship.

Reason being I don't see any team willing to offer more than what the Cardinals offered Pujols before the 2011 season. The catch is the Cardinals will be bidding against themselves if they increase the original offer. ala what the Yankees did with ARod.

The curse has to be real. Money can't get rid of that. Hope I get to see it though.

So does Albert's agent.

Or so Pujol's agent hopes. I sincerely doubt any team will compete with the Cards offer. I'm sure the Yankees would like to reconsider the ARod deal.

"What would you do if you had a million dollars?"

"Two chicks at the same time."

The Chicago Cubs: where great players go to kill their careers.

Being a Rays fan, you hope to see the Cubs win a WS? If that's the case, maybe they'll do so by beating the Rays.

that one at least made sense from a player perspective. Milwaukee had offered a good amount of change though if I remember correctly and I suppose Cashcow wanted to end the debate before the Brewers increased or if I remember any of the Cali teams opened their wallets. Though yes, once again the Yankees raised their own bid.

What a dumb article. An NL team can't sign both unless they want one to be a really expensive pinch hitter. Firstbase is ther only place Fielder can play, and the only place Pujols will agree to play.

Good point moose.

To be fair I didn't take it to mean they would sign both, they'll pursue both with the hope to sign one of them. Kind of like you pursue the blonde and brunette at the local pick up joint knowing full well you ain't getting both and in all liklihood neither.
