Marlins chasing Guillen, too

08:17 AM ET 11.30 | Courting -- with, according to some, little chance of landing them -- superstar free-agents Albert Pujols and Jose Reyes, the Marlins are also open to more modest upgrades. To that end, the Marlins have shown interest in veteran switch hitter Carlos Guillen, according to a major-league source. Guillen just completed a four-year, $48 million contract with the Tigers in which he averaged only 60 games over the final three seasons due to injuries. He was out for the first half of the 2011 season while recovering from left knee microfracture surgery and missed time down the stretch because of left wrist and right calf injuries. But he's a valuable role player when healthy, capable of playing first base, second base, third base, and left field.

HA! Look, I am very appreciative of everything Guillen has done for the Tigers this last decade -- and he's been a great player -- but the dude's knees are shot, and he's only a part-time player in the field, if at all. He'd be better on an AL team where he can play DH. His career in the field with his glass knees is over.

... which has been NEVER for the last couple of years. I love Carlos and everything he has done for the Tigers over the last several years, but this guy's career in the field is finished. He'd be better off staying in the AL where he can primarily DH, with maybe a few spot starts in the field.

d'Oh! Apologies for the double post.

Interesting to watch the Marlins as (potential) suitors for ANYBODY. For their long-suffering fans, I hope this isn't just smoke from the management to hype the stadium. I wouldn't put it past their owner.

That's why you sign his as a bench player, not as a starter. Of course, he probably still wants to get paid like a starter.

But if he goes to the Marlins we can't see him face Jered Weaver again!

Got it Marlins fans? They are really trying, but you know the small market and all. But they really really tried. Honest.

Guillen doesn't seem like a far stretch. As long as he doesn't think he is worth more than he really is. He is no Reyes and definitely no Pujols. I'd say $2mill/1yr.

Exactly - at best they sign just enough to get some buzz with the new stadium and to meet MLB demand that they spend more money on players. NOT A CENT MORE

I don't think there are any free agents willing to wear those ghastly new uniforms.
