Why Valentine's the anti-Tito

08:19 AM ET 11.30 | Perhaps allowing the pendulum to swing was part of the plan in Boston. When your team looks stagnant and complacent under a cool, calm and collected "player's manager," the way to attack the problem is by hiring his polar opposite. And so the Red Sox will replace Terry Francona, the man who stoically led Boston to two World Series titles in eight years -- after a franchise-defining 86-year drought, no less -- with former Mets manager Bobby Valentine, who is anything but stoic. ... [Valentine will] have to deal with a clubhouse full of players who took advantage of Francona, knowing he wouldn't call them out. Those days are over. Francona's polar opposite is on the way.

I'd like to go on record as saying that I think this is a mistake.

Give him a 2 yr deal and then get Farrell when his contract is up with Toronto.

I want to go on record as noting that Bobby Valentine just happened to be in Japan when Tommy Lasorda leaked the announcement to the press (with both Bobby V and Red Sox ownership refusing to comment). He's on a flight back now for the official announcement tonight...

And this occurred on the same day as a big article about Yu Darvish...

And Bobby Valentine just happened to have been the manager of the World Series champion Chiba Lotte Marines...

And the Red $ox now have a big fan ba$e in Japan from their Dice-K and Okajima day$...

All a coincidence of course. :-)

It's always good to have a Plan B.

Two years of Bobby V will shake things up in the clubhouse, and get the imploded Red Sox back in the news. That's all you need. And if Bobby V happens to be successful...

Bosox made a good choice...Bobby V. is a real good manager...he won't be dealing with a GM who an idiot (see Steve Philips)...he's got solid ballclub who just need a little kick in the hind quarters...and there won't be BE going on in that clubhouse guaranteed...he's a players manager meaning he'll stick up for his players he'll get in imputed faces if he feels his team is getting screwed...and he's still has an old school mentality which I think Boston fans will appreciate...

He'll want 3 years to give up his TV gig.

This hire has one truly outstanding quality. The first time the new manager makes a bonehead move that costs the Sox a win, we can dust off this classic clip of Dan Aykroyd choking Eddie Murphy in Trading Places....
