08:02 AM ET 12.02 | Billy Volek has become an ideal carpoolmate for Philip Rivers. Between them, they have nine kids, so [Rivers and Volek] have a working knowledge of the carpool concept. Usually, though, it's just the two of them in the vehicle on commutes to and from the office. Those rides home have gotten longer. Not in distance. In commiseration. In conversation. "When he's driven, we've sat and talked in my driveway for quite a while, talking football and talking about the game (just played)," said Volek. "People ought to be able to see what he's like, need to know how bad he wants to win." ... "I might be backing him up, and I want to play, but I'm pulling so hard for him and I will continue to help him."

Billy Volek has been around forever, and has played OK when called upon. But, you never hear his name in trade rumors. I get the feeling that he's just fine with a backup role, hold the clipboard, sit on the bench and collect enough to live on forever if you don't have a posse or 12 children with 11 mamas.
