08:13 AM ET 12.02 | Bulldog in Boston? New manager Bobby Valentine said at his Thursday press conference that his focus will be on finding a pitching coach to replace Curt Young, who returned to Oakland after one season in Boston. [The YES Network] reported Thursday night that Valentine had called David Cone. ... [Cone] is said to be not interested. Valentine may now turn to his recent ESPN broadcast partner, Orel Hershiser, who once worked as the pitching coach for the Texas Rangers, though long after Valentine managed there. Hershiser, however, is putting together a group to bid for the Los Angeles Dodgers and that commitment may preclude him rejoining Valentine in Boston.

Watched the press conference last night. Valentine was impressive. Cherrington on the other hand had the personality of a dial tone.

I do feel a lot better about this move after watching last nights press confrence. The fact that there have been reports that some players are not happy with this hire, makes me think even more this is the right guy.

I'm sure he has some guys in mind and doesn't need help from the media throwing names around. I haven't seen anything from any of the player other than Pedroia. I think most of the other stuff is just coming from the media to stir up contraversy.

Poor Cherrington, he is in way over his head. This is why promoting a GM within never seems to work out too well.

Become an owner or remain an employee? Not a tough decision.

Give the kid a chance, you never know. He's paid his dues. Plus Theo was promoted from within, and that didn't turn out to bad.

Interesting take on it...

... making the players uncomfortable is probably a good thing.

But, don't think Valentine is the answer.

And Karl Ravich as the bench coach?

Don Zimmer would be an even better selection.

I'm trying to give him a chance, but he doesn't make it easy for me. What exactly has he done for the Red Sox so far? He hasn't even been able to negotiate with his former boss for the compensation of Theo going to the Cubs. If he can't negotiate with Theo, how's he going to negotiate with Scott Boras when it's time for Ellsbury to enter free agency? IMO, Ortiz should have been signed before Valentine got hired. It is a no-brainer.

If they bring Buckner back, they should call up Mookie Wilson to see what he's up to these days.

The NY Post reported that Valentine had reached out to Bill Buckner to join his staff, but then again it's the NY Post.
