Epstein wants to build around Garza, not move him

08:13 AM ET 12.02 | Theo Epstein has a good many decisions to make with the Cubs these days, but it seems as if he's already made one on Matt Garza. [Garza's] name has surfaced in trade rumors recently because he's one of the few bargaining chips the Cubs have in trying to resuscitate an otherwise lifeless team. But Cubs president Theo Epstein didn't sound like someone who was in a hurry to deal his best starter for inventory. "He is exactly the type of guy we'd like to build around," Epstein said Thursday at Wrigley Field. Whether Epstein can afford to build around Garza is a question he's asking himself before the Winter Meetings begin on Monday in Dallas.

I like the way Theo keeps talking about making deals and putting the team together without ever mentioning his new GM. I'm thinking Hoyer is going to be a GM in title only.

Nothing wrong with that setup. Hoyer is still the GM and acts very much in that capacity. Theo is simply more popular and the tendency remains for news agencies to obtain quotes directly from him. However things will always remain No. 1 and No. 1A, there's no other way around it

Garza would bring a good haul for the Cubs. Of course, other than Starlin Castro and Carlos Marmol, he is about the only asset the sCrUBS have.
