Why Colts should part with Peyton

Yeah, let Peyton go to a team with a defense and running game. Draft Luck and destroy your fan base. Now that is a great PR move Indy!

I agree one hundred percent. Peyton is so popular in Indiana that he could run for any political office here and win (and given the bunch of boobs in Indiana politics, I'm sure he'd even do much better). This team has many more needs than the replacement plan for an aging quarterback. If he comes back healthy, he is in the top five QBs in the league, maybe even number 1. If they draft Luck and get rid of Peyton, he'll spend his first few years running for his life. David Carr, anyone?

I agree with that statement^^^, but at some point they have to look to the future. A neck injury is obviously serious and he takes one or two good hits next year and gets injured again, then I think they'll be in a similiar boat as they were this year. Wouldn't be bad to draft Luck and have him learn under Manning, kind of like a Favre-Rodgers situation.

I disagree with your Favre-Rodgers comparison. I don't think Favre was ever a mentor for Rodgers. I remember Favre making some comments along those lines. Besides, how can you compare a classy guy with some bad penny that keeps showing up?

Favre wasn't probably the greatest mentor, bitterness, but I'm sure he taught A-Rod a thing or two. Well I was comparing football players, not their personal decisions. I agree Manning is a classy person and Favre is not...

I guess we'll just have to wait and see...Favre was pretty good until they tried forcing him out, then his attitude changed. I'm not saying Manning will react that way, but you take a Franchise QB and you trying ousting him, see how he reacts when his back is against the wall.

Again, Luck is neither a forgone conclusion for the Colts or a proven talent. I'm sick of hearing about him.

I still think this is an apples and oranges comparison. Favre, during the last four years or so of his tenure in Green Bay, basically held the team hostage. He wouldn't tell them whether he was going to retire or stay with the team. This affects draft decisions, free agency signings, and other personnel moves. In my opinion, he forced their hand. The ugliness that took place in Green Bay, in my opinion, is Favre's fault.

I think it's an entirely different situation in Indy. Manning has said he wants to continue playing; he's even said he wants to come back this year.

Well if the Colts get the first pick they will select him, even if Manning returns he is aging and coming off neck surgery. A proven talent? I think he has proven he has talent, maybe not NFL proven, but he is still in college so it's difficult for him to get those NFL starts...You'll be hearing about him a lot until after the draft.

OR, they could use that first pick every round to build other parts of the team, dump some aging vets ( like some high priced DEs not named by me ) trade them for more picks and improve the team.

I'm very interested in seeing how this plays out. Not a Colts fan. One one hand I'd love for them to have both but it's also interesting to see who Peyton might play for if they don't want to keep him.

They signed him this morning at 7:57am. Apparently Stanford was just the Colts farm system and they decided to finish the year with Luck at QB...

I agree, their problems are more than a lack of QB, but they better get a back up plan just in case Manning can't play...they can go get some talent, but without a QB it's almost pointless. Although sometimes extra talent is the winning formula= dream team (Eagles).

I like how even the Indianapolis beatwriters will talk about Andrew Luck as if he's already on the team.

But... it's really only a matter of time. With New England (this week), Baltimore (next week) still on the 0-11 Colts schedule, they'll most likely need to win their last three games to not end with the worst record in the league.

I think Montana-Young is a better analogy.

I think the Colts would be stupid to part with Manning even if they draft Luck. Just because Luck is the best QB in this draft doesn't mean he is going to step in and fill Manning's shoes right away.

I think the Colts are in a fantastic position. They can draft Luck and keep him around for a couple years to learn the game at the next level or they can see where Mannings health is come draft day and examine what trading Luck would do for them. Just because Luck is the best QB in this draft doesn't mean the next few won't have some just as good as him.
