Will MLS bend rules for Toronto FC?

11:01 AM ET 12.04 | Two of Toronto's most consistent performers in 2011, Joao Plata and Richard Eckersley were consensus fan favorites heading into the off-season. But with the Reds already employing three designated players - Danny Koevermans, Torsten Frings and Julian de Guzman - the numbers don't seem to add up. With the addition of a handful of off-season acquisitions necessary, negotiating a deal to keep the internationals at BMO Field appears impossible on the surface. That said, it's commonplace for Major League Soccer to bend the rules to benefit clubs, and the league.

Shocking that the cap isn't high enough?
I've only been saying this for 4 years.
The deal the players negotiated last screws them.
I know the owners have put in a lot of money, but that is not the current players fault.
And with teams like the galaxy negotiating a $55 million tv deal I think the Mike Magee and others of the world show the average salary should be more then $110K.

and I've been rolling my eyes for 4 years.
According to the Player Union's site for salaries:
The average LA salary is 91,141 (compensated) if we take out the three designated players.
Take a team like CUSA who didnt have any Des. Players and the 26 players they had signed and affecting the cap we saw an average of 101,776
I believe LA and Seattle were the only teams who pulled a profit last season, why should we put more financial stress on the rest of the league?

not to mention there is allocation to take into the equation. MLS rarely releases the specifics behind how much allocation is given by MLS and also during trades. TFC has traded a good deal of players over the years.
Eckersley and Plata both make less then $100k, i'm not sure what the problem is.

but here's my thing.... doesn't the cap increase every year under the new CBA?

yes, though i think only 5%
Still, we have to take the positives into account. MLS has increased the minimum. Teams pay 42k to some players who are very likely never going to see pitch. Sometimes, negotiations work well for teams (ie. Larentowitz was making 32.6k at NER before going to Colorado where he makes 100k+)
Quite frankly the $$ is in the tv contracts, and few teams actually have a contract that offsets their costs. In the end, the money isnt there to bust up the cap.

The fact the Galaxy was able to do as much as they have in the DP market on their old TV deal says so much. It'll be interesting to see how far they go on the DP market in the post-Becks era.

If they changed the rules for Toronto, it would help teams like LA, New York, and Seattle more.

Can't wait for the BCS championship game. I love watching the same game over and over and over and over.
And over and over and over and over.

As screwed up and corrupt as FIFA is.... at least you know the World Cup is designed to crown a worthy champion. 32 teams have an equal shot to win. It's not left to reporters or a bunch of old guys in a smoky backroom trading teams and calling in favors to bend the system.
