08:20 AM ET 12.06 | The Caps' slide continued in Florida Monday, but there was some good news in Washington hockey. The Capitals, as you may have read by now, are now in a seven-team conference with Carolina, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and the New York Islanders and Rangers. "We think it???s great for our fans that we???re back in the [Patrick Division] again," McPhee said. "Because it???s been historically a great division and our fans have always loved those rivalries. It???s a great realignment in every regard," he added. ... According to ontheforecheck.com, the Capitals will have the fifth-shortest average distance to conference opponents at 195 miles. "It will be the best travel schedule in the league," McPhee said.

every team won big. huge improvement. positive change and common sense actually prevailed at the nhl. The apocalypse must be around the corner.

Two stories on realignment? Can't blame the interns for missing out on an important change in the league.

Expect expansion to start being the word of the day sometime in the not-too-distant future. There are two spots left in the 2 Eastern divisions for a reason..

Also, and i'm being totally biased here but don't care, the playoff format is pure rubbish. After playing each division opponent six times, they have to play two guaranteed rounds against them in the postseason too? I'm not too keen on having the Leafs' butts handed to them by Boston on an annual basis for the next five years.

Caps gotta win big sometime. Sorry, Slap. The door was open. ;)

I know the Wings will benefit from this realignment. They'll have no problems being at the top of their conference under the new format. Mind you, they always managed to be up there year in and year out anyway but, this will make it a little easier.

I vote for contract 6.

"Caps won big in realignment"

Only if they start winning on the ice!

December 6, 2011  10:43 AM ET

They way the Caps have been playing and looking at their new conference mates, one could say they lost big just as easy as you could say they won big.

Cruel DWI. Accurate, but cruel. Canuck's right. Dale is sending that elbow (but it's wearing Asham's jersey)! :-)

I guess they'll have to come up with a new excuse if things don't work out then...

You're from Toronto. Why do you care about the format of the playoffs? :)

Why do you care about the playoff format? Did you forget you live in Toronto? :)

But Antonino Rocca regains consciousness and smacks down the Iron Sheik for a last minute victory. Evil is once again defeated.

Contracting two teams would be much better. It's not enough, but it would be a good start.

I'm with you Hank.

Time to ditch the teams that are not in hockey towns, two in Florida, Carolina, Dallas, Nashville and Pittsburgh.

I'll address this as soon as I'm done chewing on this tasty turnbuckle.
