10:23 AM ET 12.10 | American goalkeeper Brad Friedel has issued an apology and a clarification concerning comments he made this week about former U.S. World Cup teammate Landon Donovan. "I did not mean to disparage or demean Landon Donovan or his accomplishments in any way, shape or form," Friedel said in a statement sent to the Insider on Friday. "I was merely paying respects to Clint Dempsey for his fantastic career. I apologize if my remarks offended anyone, especially Landon. It was not my motive. I would never bash a fellow American player."

We can say whatever we want about LD, this fact will always remain - what if?
Is he one of, if not the best USMNT player ever? Yes.
What if he would have jumped ship to the EPL or Serie A or <insert better-than-MLS-league here>?

He took the PC route but, sorry LD, this is the truth:
???You get a player like a Landon Donovan, who in my opinion chose to take the easy road and stay in the States. It???s much harder to ply your trade over here. [The Premier League] is the best league in the world to play in, and this is where [Dempsey] got better in my opinion. This is where he became one of the best the United States ever produced.???

I will give LD some credit though. He *tried*, he was young and away from the states. He did it at a time, unlike now, when there really wasn't a ton of US nationals playing overseas. I am *sure* it was hard. He came back, did the MLS, grew up, became a good player, at that point this is where Friedel's comments ring true. He *could* have gone back abroad, he *could* have maybe even been *great* for *great* leagues. He will be forever be a *great* player in a mediocre league and a average player in the premiere league**.
**Maybe he would have/could have done more at Everton. Sad thing is we'll never know.

Friedel has nothing to apologize for - damn the world is too politically correct nowadays. He certainly didn't say anything as bad as LD did about Beckham.....
FN does owe Brad an apology for posting the T&R picture of him appearing quite constipated.
