Sparano's going, Ireland's staying

08:03 AM ET 12.12 | Miami's late-season surge came crashing down Sunday in a 26-10 loss. Coach Tony Sparano, a man of dignity, will lose his job the first week of 2012 because he was given mediocre talent and couldn't turn that into mediocre results this season. ... General manager Jeff Ireland, meanwhile, will retain his job. Owner Stephen Ross, the only opinion that truly matters, is convinced that Ireland should be retained because the Dolphins are indeed talented enough to win and win big with just a couple of important additions to the roster. The owner believes Ireland has done a good enough job in compiling this roster so far and can continue to add talent that a new head coach will develop more successfully than Sparano did.

It's too bad they caught the Eagles with a resurgent Vick. The Dolphins were not playing that badly.

Consider yourself sacrificed, Tony. Given the way you've turned the team around, sort of, somebody will give you another chance.

He was on his way out last year. They gave Sparano his 48 week notice.

He was given a couple of has-beens and never-will-bes and we did what he could.

Instability at the QB position cost Sporano his job. Other than that, they played well under him.

That is a shame ...Sparano seemed to get a terrible team to play- and he might have cost the franchise a run at Luck or Barkley or even RGIII

Look at it this way, Tony, at least you don't have to put up with that mess any more. I don't think anyone was thrilled to see your squad on their schedule this year, regardless of the outcome. The Phins, for the most part, were prepared and played hard, they just don't have the talent to win.

Sporano will likely get another chance someplace down the line to redeem himself. I think the Dolphins should be treated like the Cubs when it comes to coaching resumes, which is pretty much just an "oops, sorry"

It could have been a different T&R this morning if the Fish had won yesterday. Their game had been trending upwards, while the Eagles had been in a slide.

And a two-year contract. He'll get paid to sit on his arse next year, if he likes.

I was thinking the same thing. Another GM who gets to hang around longer than he should (A.J. SMith, Jerry Angelo, Rick Spielman...)

Add Marty Hurney from the Panthers to that list...only good draft pick the last 3-4 years have been Cam and Beason..the busts FAR outweigh the good picks in during his tenure including trading a 2nd rd pick for Armanti Edwards who barely has more return yards than me in 2 seasons..smh

As soon as they fire him, Dallas will hire him, he's better off getting away from the disorganization called The Dolphins!!! Good Luck Tony, call your buddy Jerry he has big problems!!!

First, I don't see how you can have an improvement at the head coaching position unless you find a head coach who has complete control of the personnel. This doesn't appear likely, which sets up the job for another flunky, assistant or castoff head coach from some other organization. Secondly, there has to be urgency at getting a really good QB out of the draft around whom the Dolphins can build the team of the future. Let's all dispense with the mantra that we are a few players away from getting to the superbowl and admit that we need to restructure from the bottom up. Let's get young players, who can't perform any worse than the players we've had this year, and grow them within the system. Let's build for the future.
