08:04 AM ET 12.16 | Drew Brees prefers to keep his focus on the field, not the windfall that awaits him. Brees, 32, is due to be a free agent after this season, though the Saints can maintain rights to him through the franchise tag. "You know, I didn't want it to become a distraction," Brees said of the decision that was quietly made sometime in the past month. "And from the discussions we had, going back and forth, there was no progress really being made. I really wanted to just focus on football. ... His next deal is expected to compete with the recent deals signed by [Peyton Manning] (five years, $100 million), [Tom Brady] (a four-year, $72 million extension) and [Michael Vick] (at least five years, $80 million).

Vick - what a stupid contract. Brees will make out very well.

Break Marino's single-season passing yards record and then resume negotiations. Jacks up your value and accrues karma points for taking the high road at the same time. Brilliant.

This isn't the time of the year to be focusing on contracts. Hopefully, that's all this is about. Besides, a deep playoff run will make him worth even more.

Brees is a smart guy. He knows if he takes care of business on the field the Saints will take care of everything else. No franchise tag for this guy after all he's done for the team and the city of New Orleans.

With that big bag of money the NFofL is getting from the networks the next 9 years, I'm sure the Saints will find a few sheckles to toss Brees' way.

We got this same story about Brady and Peyton Manning. Yes, everyone's contract expires, and has to get re-negotiated when it does. Why is this news?

'Cause Brees is so vital to the Saints. And 'cause if they didn't pump up stuff like this they'd have to actually talk football and playoff scenarios and stuff. That's intimidating.

It will be a figure close to Manning & Brady...if they don't work a deal out there will be a tag slapped on him in February and they'll keep working on it. Good nonstory
