08:14 AM ET 12.19 | Choosing the past tense is never a good way to assure fans of your return. Jason Kubel sounded like someone who knows his career with the Twins is over. "It's a great organization and still is," Kubel said Sunday. "I've had a lot of fun. I loved the front office, the staff and the fans." The 29-year-old free agent is closing in on a deal this week with another club, seemingly leaving the Twins with a 2012 outfield of Ben Revere, Denard Span and recent free-agent signee Josh Willingham. Should Kubel depart, he would be the third long-time Twins player to leave as a free agent this offseason, joining closer Joe Nathan (Texas) and outfielder Michael Cuddyer (Colorado).

Hate seeing a class organization and town struggle like this ... the Twins for so long represented all that was good about baseball -- a smart club that competed with the Borgias.

You can thank the Mauer contract for that. What an albatross.

The Twins lost 2 of their most consistent performers in Cuddyer and Kubel. That's pretty tough for a small market team to withstand.

willingham will take care kubel and cuddyer production in 2012? itsn't that what the twins are hoping? but then againg one single player can do so much. only sometimes the new players are being expected to carry the team from time to time !!!

no kubel, no cuddyer, the big responsability falls in mauer, and bourneau, plus on willingham!!

Jim Thome carried the Twins on his mighty shoulders 2 years ago and they really needed it with Mauer and Morneau failing so badly. Now they have have nothing. It truely is sad to see how far that team has fallen.

They should keep Kubel and get rid of Span... Him & Revere are the same type of player (Span has more pop (when he's on the field)).

I'm thinking the Twins are in Re-grouping mode.

kubels sign a two years deal with the d'backs!!

if the twins lose those two players its because the organization refuse to pay them the right deal,is true that colorado overpaid cuddyer but at least the twins should had signed kubel, perhaps something positive would had come out of this player he may had being the difference in the twins team!!

It's sad to see The Twins lose the heart (kugel) and (Cuddyer) their soul and pay the big contacts to guys that r disabled. Hopefully they have some good young talent ready to fill their shoes?

Span and Revere are both good outfielders, and many MLB teams are emphasizing defense as we continue to move from the steroids era (someone please send that memo to Ryan Braun). Plus, the team is going to use Mauer and Morneau at DH as well, which leaves Kubel few at bats. The Twins will be alright if their starting pitching gets better. Doubtful, since they made zero moves to improve it.
