08:11 AM ET 12.19 | Reds GM Walt Jocketty was finally able to make a move, but it did not come without cost, as he traded Yonder Alonso, catcher Yasmani Grandal and right-handers Edinson Volquez and Brad Boxberger for Mat Latos. ... Alonso ranked third on Baseball America's list of Reds' prospects. Grandal was fourth and Boxberger 10th. Boxberger was potentially the answer at closer. The Reds will try to address that need as well as get outfield help. Jocketty said this could be the first of several moves. "We've got some things on the back burner and on the front burner," he said." "We still trying to do some more deals -- at least one more for pitching. We're looking at potential free agents. We'll stay pretty active the next weeks."

LOVE seeing mid-market clubs/GMs get creative! Baseball needs strong teams in places like Cincinnati. Go for it, Jocketty!

Gave up alot for a guy who has been average at best in the majors, but with letting Alonso go might be a sign that they will sign Votto to a big contract, Boxberger was really looking special thought for sure he would step into the closer roll this year.....Glad to see they pawned off Volquez, that could go down as one of the worst moves Reds every made in history Volquez for Hamilton.

Latos moving from a pitcher's park to a hitter's park. Will be interesting to see how he handles it.

December 19, 2011  10:46 AM ET

Latos is a good young pitcher, but I think the Reds gave up way too much for him.

Very true. A pitcher can get away with some mistakes in San Diego's ballpark.

it won't surprise me if the reds go after shields from the rays, just saying!!

this where latos has to prove if indeed he is capable of holding the hitters in the infield!!

the reds have learned that they have to invest, unless they still would like to be a pretenders an not contenders!!!

it could be that the reds did give alot for latos, but the only way any team can get big return, or big leaguers is only through trades nothing else!!

December 19, 2011  12:18 PM ET

b,j, upton its expected to be traded this coming season, the rays could get a good return, either for bj upton or for shields, at the end anything can happen!!

December 19, 2011  12:21 PM ET

the mariners still thinking in the past, they have refuse to go the extra mile by not signning fielder they will save a tond of money!!

That was my thought. Is he significantly better than Volquez enough to justify giving up Alonso?

It's so funny how people keep saying the Reds gave up too much. 1st of all, Edinson Volquez is done. He had a great season his 1st year with the Reds. Since then, he's led the majors in 1st inning ERA, he has had an ERA constantly over 6, he's had Tommy John surgery, he's been suspended 50 games for a failed test and last year he was up and down from the minors. Shedding his contract is great. As for Alonso, good young player, good bat, but his natural position is 1st base. Votto is planted there for years to come. Alonso can't play left field. They tried. It didn't work. Grandal is one of the best catching prospects in all of baseball. Problem is, a prospect ahead of him in that category, Devin Mesoraco, IS ALSO ON THE REDS! As for the reliever, he was a Single A and Double A pitcher last year. No biggie. As for Latos, he was close to the top in many categories last year including ERA, Strikeouts and Quality Starts, for a team that did nothing and didn't help him out offensively. Latos is gonna be a very solid #2 behind Johnny Cueto. This is a GREAT trade for the Reds. It's great for both teams.

Yes the Reds gave up a lot but in return they received a just turned 24 year old power pitcher who has already had success (sub 3.0 ERA in 2010 and sub 3.0 ERA in second half of 2011). Latos is also under club control for 4 more seasons. If he succeeds and the Reds can make runs in the playoffs or even a WS victory payroll will increase and the Reds will have the money to sign Votto who has said he can't see himself playing anywhere else. Arroyo and Rolen also are finished with the Reds after this next season which free's up 20+ million. Juan Fransisco is waiting in the wings to take over for Rolen and Chapman can replace Arroyo in the rotation after he is gone (Chapman as closer this year with Cueto, Latos, Leake, Bailey, Arroyo in rotation?). This trade helps both clubs

Gotta disagree with you Alacran. The guys the Rays were interested in are in San Diego now. The Rays trading Shields wouldn't surprise me, but at this point, Cincy doesn't have what the Rays want anymore.

December 19, 2011  07:13 PM ET

Hopefully Latos will work out, high price, ouch!!!

Two years.

Given the fact that Votto didn't even surrender one of his free agent years when he signed his "extension," I'd be surprised if he's a Red in 2014.

When they talk about the Reds overpaying, it's not because of Volquez. Beyond all those things you mentioned, he just sucks.

However, he has no contract to shed.

The Padres are getting ripped in the local paper, for the trade. I think it's a good move. This orginization won't spend on players, we have to make trades and hope for the best. That's just the way it is.
