WVU coach's past racial incident

West Virginia's Bill Stewart has been a head coach once before, going 8-25 at Virginia Military Institute in 1994-96, before leaving there in a cloud of controversy. Stewart was accused in '96 of calling a Keydets player a racial slur in an October practice. The coaches and players cleared the air, many said afterward, but a school investigation resulted in Stewart's resignation. One newspaper account at the time quoted a former graduate assistant, then at Memphis, who said that he never heard Stewart utter a racial slur -- that coach is Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. Yesterday, Tomlin had nothing but praise for Stewart.

It's nice to see someone other than a ladder climber get a great opportunity. We wish him success!!

Amazing. The press and the media just love to try and destroy people. I wish this new coach of WVA lots of success....he seems to have fantastic rapport with the players.

Come on I mean really get of your damn high horse he will make a fine fit and just because he's from WVU doesn't make him a racist so knock that crap off and stop trying to cut people down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So Nick Saban, Bear Bryant, Woody Hayes, Ara Parsegian, and Knute Rockne NEVER uttered offensive comments? EVER?

Nothing offends me like the racial slurs that were hurled at the performers in the Aboriginal Parents without Partners Hand-Puppet Threatre Company.

Typical Main Stream Sports Media Yellow Journalism GARBAGE...they can't report on REAL sports news (that's take some actual work and effort) but, they can try to smear a good man and attempt to smear a quality program.

Need a slur? Here's a slur for ya...SPORTS WRITERS SUCK!

The guy's got an 8-25 (now 9-25) record as a head coach. What's not to love? STOP SMEARING THIS CLEARLY QUALIFIED HEAD COACH!

I absolutely agree, though. SPORTS WRITERS and most ANNOUNCERS are TERRIBLE.

I wonder what racial slur it is b/c some are worse than others.

Here's the hierarchy:
Black racial slur-immediate firing and cast out of America.
Asian racial slur- firing after some debate.
Latino racial slur- suspension for a week.
White racial slur- given a lecture about sensitivity.
Italian Racial slur- patted on the back.
Polish/Irish Racial slur- life of the party.

This guy was coaching at WVU for so long, and now we hear about this?? Too questionable for me.

How does garbage like this get up here? Even if this story is partially accurate, I suppose all self righteous folks have never had a "slip of the tongue?" Give me a break. Sounds like somebody out there is just pissed off because the Sooners got their clocks cleaned.

Man, probably the only person who ever walked this planet who hasn't had a racial epiphet come out of his mouth is Jesus Christ. Just because we might say one it doesn't necessarily mean it's with malice.

Trust me as a minority minority, I heard my share of them during my childhood, and again said some too, but I never got malice out of any of them otherwise it would be fighting time...

Typo, that should be racial epithet! This board should have EDIT function like espn.com!

Could I report a violation for that? I bet you actually typed *'s.

I just realized that the trophy Stewart is holding is pretty crazy looking. It looks like a junior sized football spraypainted gold with a Fiesta Bowl logo on it.

I hate when the media does stuff like this....he has a great coaching win in the Fiesta Bowl, but instead of talking about that they want to bring up the old stuff.

January 4, 2008  11:16 AM ET

Calling the trophy a "Cheerios toy" is a metallic slur!
