07:41 AM ET 12.21 | Not only did the Rangers reportedly outbid the Toronto Blue Jays for the rights to negotiate with Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish, but they also apparently more than doubled the offer turned in by the New York Yankees. The Yankees bid less than $20 million for Darvish, according to a Tuesday report by ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand. The Rangers won the chance to negotiate with the 25-year-old by placing a bid of $51.7 million.

Not sure what to make of this "news" by Andrew Marchand. A posting bid less than $20 million wouldn't be a serious bid. It was pretty well known that a player for Darvish would have to be somewhere in the neighborhood of Dice-K's $51 million for the Nippon Ham Fighters to accept it.
I guess I'll put this story in the cylindrical file along with the story about how the Blue Jays submitted the highest bid.

I am looking forward to this guy going 7-15 with an ERA of 4.89.

The bids are sealed so not sure if this was just a wild guess or not. Either way it doesn't make any difference since pretty much everyone knew that this bid would need to be higher than the Dice-K bid.

Why even bid when you know the winning bid was going to be higher than what the Red Sox paid for Dice K?

So there shouldn't be any of the usual bellyaching or crying on this site about how the Yankees are 'ruining' the game by overspending.

With their need of pitching and deep pockets I am equally surprised at this. They have learned from Irabu it seems.

....i must consider the possibility that the yanks front office is far smarter than i have given them credit.....if they have dropped the silly notion of being one player away, etc., and instead focus on the long haul (rebuild farm) ....that deserves to be applauded.....however, i prefer instead to think they got beat again by the ranger front office....a losing streak that goes back to the cliff lee deal...

Yeah, having Cliff Lee briefly helped you win a World Series. Oh wait.

...agree yanks farm is better than it was just a few years ago (were about last)...primarily due to no big trades the last couple years and the blockage at the top preventing worthy players from a shot...if thats what the yanks are indeed about now days, that concerns me as ranger fan....would prefer the yanks to continue bad behavior...

........the cliff lee deal did get the lowly rangers in the game mentally for taking that step...it was a big step for that franchise and worth the cost...i prefer to think of them as in the same place as the dallas cowboys in late 60's....great talent coming up just short time and again....then one season they break thru and continue on a record 20 consecutive seasons with playoffs and a few rings...

Take a look at what the Red Sox threw at Crawford and Martinez. This year the Angels go for the two top players available. Now Texas is jumping into the money pit with this unproven player. Yeah, the Yankees are the Evil Empire alright.

Embarrassing? How about encouraging? You want embarrassing, see the New York Mets. They've got embarrassment to spare.

The Yankees staff was essentially tied for third lowest ERA in the AL, the 3 teams ahead of them all pitched in pitcher's parks, the Yankees in a bandbox. "The Yankees are in dire need of pitching" stuff is overplayed. Could they use a starter or two? Of course. As could every team in baseball.
