Sources: SMU makes Jones offer

Posted: Friday January 04, 2008 07:09AM ET

SMU has offered Hawaii coach June Jones between $1.7 million and $2 million to become its football coach, according to two sources. Jones emerged as a candidate in late December, and SMU's pursuit has picked up since Hawaii closed its 12-1 season Tuesday with a 41-10 loss to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. Jones is reportedly taking time to consider his future ??? which includes interest from a college and an NFL team, according to The Honolulu Advertiser.

Does anyone know how old June is?

Uh-oh.... Where's the clown?

Report Offensive Comment

Relax guys. I am a SMU alum who would love to see Jones coach the Mustangs and even I don't believe he will take it. While Jones is taking time to ponder his future, he is giving Hawaii alums time to make a significant counter offer. He is using SMU for leverage to get more out of Hawaii. That's all. Too bad too because we could really use him.

Bobby Petrino has been at Arkansas for almost a month. It should be time for him to be looking for another job soon.... : )

Hey Captain Sunshine, I put one more little SMU history thing back on the earlier thread. It is about a guy named Wagner who intially kept Dickerson and James both on the bench at SMU. True story.

Report Offensive Comment

No. I think they honored the scholarship, but I don't know if he ever graduated. I think they found the cervical problem his freshman year. But the guy was head and shoulders better than Dickerson and James so you can just imagine what he could have been without the injury. I really do feel bad for the guy too because Al said he was a good guy.

At least the smaller programs are beginning to get national recognition... even with journalists

Report Offensive Comment

Nahh. He was a stud player. He was one of the 4 all-american running backs SMU recruited that year. And Al Gregg swore he could do a 360 dunk in full pads. Al played with all-americans like Dickerson, James, Russel Carter, Michael Carter, etc and swore Wagner was the most impressive athlete he had ever seen.

Stranger things have happened before in college ball. Maybe Jones is tired of the life in the easy lane.

I have one name for June; Cam Cameron. There is a whole lot of difference between the expectations in the wonderful world of WAC/Hawaii football, the NFL and Major Conference College ball.

Report Offensive Comment

He BETTER NOT EFFIN leave. I will make him wish that accident he had was no accident.

Captain Sunshine

Man, you are one scary clown. That lead paint may have gotten to you.

Report Offensive Comment

Relax dude, I would be shocked if Jones left. He is just leveraging SMU to get more money from Hawaii. He has a great setup and I am sure he knows it. The only way it would be better is if Hawaii paid him more money. I am sure enough rich alums think like you and I am sure they will come up with an offer that makes him want to stay.

Report Offensive Comment

Don't go June. Bad idea. Much rather live in Hawaii.

Report Offensive Comment

Hawaii is a great place for vacation.
not football

everyone of us know he is leaving

John Clayton has reported on ESPN that SMU is also interested in Mike Martz, another creative offensive mind. I think Jones is waiting for Hawaii to pony up (no pun intended).

If Herman Frazier let's him get away, I'll fly out to Hawaii and plant a ti leaf on a part of Herman's anatomy where the sun don't shine.

I don't think Jones will leave, not with Bo Mitchell coming in and with Graunke, Gryce Mullen, Bess, Pilares and Libre coming back, not to mention AhSoon, Elimimian, Soares and a host of other underclassmen and new recruits coming in. Hawaii was not a senior dominated team.

Report Offensive Comment

Martz wouldn't be a bad choice for SMU either. We aren't going to get the athletes, so we need an offensive "guru" whose smart play calling and sharp timing patterns can compensate for a lac k of speed, strength and quickness. Jones would be my first choice, but Martz would work too.

Report Offensive Comment

Captain Sunshine, do you think Martz could do anything for SMU?

Report Offensive Comment

I can't see Mike Martz as a college coach. His attitude might rub some folks the wrong way.

Report Offensive Comment

Heck it works down at Texas Tech with Mike Leach ... why not at SMU with martz.

If Jones feels he has gone as far with the program in Hawaii as he can go, then he is gone and SMU would be an interesting choice. I think he believes Hawaii is not going to do the things necessary to go to the next level, and he would be right.
