Chamberlain says he's stronger than ever

08:14 AM ET 12.26 | Through his ups and downs on the baseball field, Joba Chamberlain enjoyed his calendar year. "I've learned a lot this year," the Yankee reliever said in a recent telephone interview. "Physically, I'm stronger than I've ever been, and mentally I'm stronger, too. I've always known what's important, but now I know what it takes to be really successful in this game. I may not have known except for Tommy John surgery." It's another dose of experience in a career that has seen the "Joba Rules," the usage plan designed to keep him injury-free; public debate over whether he'd be better as a starter or reliever; and a bout with a swarm of Lake Erie midges in a sweaty 2007 playoff game in Cleveland. "I've been through A to Z," he says.

Talented kid with a pea brain.
Real question is, can he grow up?

He's got a lot of competition in the Yankee bullpen. He used to be the setup man and possible heir to Mo's closer role but now he's standing at best in line behind Soriano and Robertson. Hopefully he's taking the off season seriously and training hard.

Girardi has to do a better job of deciding exactly how he is going to use this guy.
He worked his a## off right before he got hurt last year.

I don't know about that...

He pitched 14 (or so) innings in the Month before he got hurt... Yes... Month... and 28 for the season up to June 5.

And this was the guys with "Joba Rules"... Sometimes these things happen - and those little rubber bands on the inside of the elbow don't care how strong you are.

Hopefully he'll make it back soon...

It is more than just numbers. Stats like that do not show how many times you get a guy up and warm him up, the times you pitch him three days in a row or get him up to pitch 5 days in a row.
Girardi needs a plan and he needs to stick to it. He scares too easily with his starters. He could not tell you right now what role he has for Chamberlain, not at all. And could not last year. or the years before. He has bee at the end of a Yoyo for the last few years.
