Forecast in Philly offers signs of trouble

08:32 AM ET 12.26 | The most essential element in a Winter Classic production is ice. So far the league lucked out on weather in its four outdoor games in the U.S., but now there's a problem: It has been unseasonably warm in Philadelphia, where the Classic's fifth incarnation is scheduled on Jan. 2. A little slush and drizzle is okay, as witnessed by the 2011 Classic in Pittsburgh. But anything worse would make the rink under construction at Citizens Bank Park unplayable. Exactly when the New York Rangers and host Philadelphia Flyers will play is left to the elements. According to Weather.com, NHL ice guru Dan Craig will have his hands full keeping the makeshift rink up to standard.

The weather in the Sabres/Pens game was perfect and they haven't been able to get it again. Forecast is for highs in the lower 40s all week. They should be abel to get the ice in shape for the game.

This is to wish all our Canadian bretheren a Happy Boxing Day. I have no idea what "Boxing Day" is but go a couple rounds for me. :)

From the word 'boxes', not boxing the sport. Traditionally a day when people put all the gifts they received and didn't like in a box then return them to the stores.

not to return them to the stores but to give them to the less fortunate

Oh, I didn't know that. I like Cscott's version better though. What homeless person wouldn't want a Toronto Maple Leaf's tie.

Nothing worse than skating on slush wearing full equipment on a warm day.
Simply another reason Hank would find the event a waste of time...to be sure...You know if you think about it...I'd wager that concussions could be completely eliminated if players didn't wear socks, sweaters and hockey pants.

...And this is why this game needs to be in Canada. Maybe the NHL can schedule the next Winter Classic in Miami.

This much I know: whatever it is, you don't want to be anywhere near any shopping malls or mega stores over there. Our Canuck brethren make our yearly Wal-Mart stampede look like child's play by comparison!

Warm weather, maybe they could agree to play with a Beach Ball To make it fair for Philly`s goalies ..

I like it, the beach ball could also help cut down on injuries to the Rangers Defensemen. It's been 2 games since they had one get hurt so they're due

judging by the pic from this thread i cant understand how someone could "sneak" one through that 5 hole..

Seems to me I remember an outdoor game in Vegas back in the 90s. A lot warmer than the 40s it seems to me. I thought they had the technology to do that. Maybe it can't be done economically for the one game?

Get the pepper spray handy! There's some push'n & shove'n to do. If the weather doesn't fit, you must not not commit. If the ice is questionable....someone is going to get hurt!

...and all the stores have blow-out sales. Akin to Black Friday....though why people line-up in the cold and wait through the night, is beyond me.
